i'd bet my life on the fact its not the IP you're assigned, for 2 reasons, I have had good and bad on the same IP and its all software controlled as apposed to be redirected to a seperate part of the network as with ADSL

Correct Slim, it is not the IP as it changed a few times with router and modem resets.

Starts out fast for about 5 sec then drops to almost nothing and I cannot even get to the speed test urls.

Ping is within reason so I have no clue what is happening here, I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it comes right later.

Too expensive calling helpdesk from CT to be kept waiting like most have.

Managed to get to the telkom test and this is the lowest I have ever seen my connection.

* Download time: 602.734 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 6.8 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 0.8 (kiloBytes/second)

the 5 seconds thing to me sounds liek the bandwith manager (the bit that throttles us when capped) because its always been like that, starts fast and clamps down in a few seconds... wouldn't it be messed up if this wasnt a huge technical error at the tower or hardware error but merely a misconfiguration or not so liberal code added to the bandwidth manager, meaning it could all be avoided.... but isn't... for some reason, probably money

yeah and notice how your speeds are all around 6.7 6.8kbit, I'm sorry but that sort of consistancy can only be due to a rule in the throttling software

Hmmm, I think you on to something there with the bandwidth manager, and I still have about 2g to go.

Just have to hope that wbs read this forum as phoning is not an option, and they don't answer emails.

Then again maybe after musa recieved my stinking email they decided to get rid of me. :D

Wonder how that software works, what it checks, sometimes (rarely now, but worked last week Thursday / Friday) a reconnect on a different IP removes the problem...

well they controlt hat and theres no way round it since the throttler is at the gateway, you can test our theory by trying a transfer between you and another iburst user, if its fastish tyhern you know its the throttler since iburst to iburst doesnt go through the gateway

if it is.. contact shaun and ask him for luis email address or try get hold of luis yourself but technical guys dont like customers, so play it cool

Download speed is back so I guess they were busy testing things, but webpages are still slow.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 3.703 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 1101.8 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 135 (kiloBytes/second)

well, its probably an intelligent firewall 9same software responsible for packet shaping) with a rule that would run an external program written by someone at WBS that would check the database to see your total usage periodically or apon connection or when connecting to a computer on the net, it would then tell the firewall how to handle the connection, like shape the **** out of it or let it be etc

In other words, if a connection is identified as being in Pta, we get capped, regardless of remaining bandwidth :(
In my case I've got almost 2.6 GB left, along with others on this list, we're not allowed to use our included / allocated bandwidth.

i dont think its pretoria only, hate to say it but what you need to do is actually go to WBS and talk with someone face to face and dont leave till you get chucked out or its sorted

Don't think I'll do that, want to keep my record clean, have never been charged with "using excessive force"

So far the severe premature cappulation has only been reported by people in the Pretoria are (4 towers) if my memory serves me correctly, and by this I mean sub 7 kilobits / sec on uncapped accounts.
And I thought being capped was bad at the end of May, yesterday I was quite pleased with normal capped speeds for the little while that I had it.

OK, I stand corrected, missed that location.
But then, I stated uncapped in my previous post.

iBurst Pretoria

Hi All.
This is my first post as I only joined iBurst this morning. I decided on the 3GB month-by-month connection and I'm making use of the Wonderboom tower. I can honestly say my iBurst connection is MUCH slower than my Mweb with Propel Accelerator connection used to be. Luckily I have the option of them canceling my subscription and buying back the modem within 7 days. If iBurst can't get their act together, this is exactly what I'll do. If the announcement about the cut-off cap turns out to be true, I might just cancel my subscription in any case.

Also, what is the link for the telkom speed measure site?
Thanx
