I have found through testing I have done to sort out a disconnect problem (see http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=49679) that my phone was much more reluctant to switch to GPRS while there's data being sent/received.
When I run ping somesite.com -t, I can weaken my 3G signal down to 1 bar and the phone wouldn't switch back to GPRS. When I stop the pings, about 5 seconds later my phone would switch to GPRS.
Seeing that pings doesn't take much traffic, could this be used to "prevent" a 3G connection from switching back to GPRS in areas where the 3G signal is adequate but not great?
I'm no IT nerd, so would constant pinging of a site be construed as abuse or something?
