DStv vs Online streaming — Pricing showdown

The cost of subscribing to five online video streaming services and a 25Mbps fibre package for two years is only around R700 more than the total amount you will pay on a DStv Premium contract over the same period.

DStv has continued to implement annual price increases, while video streaming subscription fees in South Africa have largely remained unchanged, and broadband prices have plummeted.

While most streaming services popular in South Africa focus on international content, MultiChoice has stated that it will take a "hyper-local" approach with DStv to compete with Netflix.

This is evident in MultiChoice's decisions around its channel line-up.

I stopped reading there. If you have to stack the deck it's not worth dealing.

How come these articles seem to assume DSTV subscribers don't also have an internet connection?

Agreed, DSTV will(has?) become exponentially less relevant.
It's quite obvious that they are going for volume of clients on the lower end of the market, as well as expansion in to other African countries.

And you can't bank and game and troll and more over a DSTV subscription.

I see DSTV the same as a Netflix or Amazon Prime sub. Yes it costs more but it has some things I don't get on any of the other streaming packages.

Also, inb4 the "I've been DSTV free for X amount of years" posts

DSTV vs Netflix or Amazon is a lousy comparison.

A more creditable one would be DSTV vs the internet but we couldn't have that, could we. We have to give DSTV a fair chance for some reason. ;)

Just goes to show how DSTV subscribers are being ripped off!
They have lost more than the R21,000 rand from me as I terminated my subscriptions +/- 5 years ago.

I prefer to have all by bases covered. DSTV, Netflix, Amazon, Showmax and for those really hard to find items, TPB.

And there it is...

For the reason you quoted. To try and make dstv seem more appealing than it actually is...

I'd rather pay R600 more a year for all streaming services and have a very flexible internet connection (that I can literally do anything with) than pay for DSTV that I can't even browse porn with

Dstv without a PVR at least is even more useless. You have to actually sit and wait for the program to start and sit their nailed to watch. No pausing or rewinding.
Also, even with the PVR, have to wait for the program to be downloaded completely before you can watch it. (Minus points)
As well as your space is so limited on the PVR too. Sorry, that is all you may have, delete something else you thought you wanted to watch again. (Minus Points)

"Oh, that is a nice series my friends talks about, let me watch it from the start."
Dstv reply: No! Wait till we repeat it agian, it will be soon enough in any case - maybe. (Minus points)
Streaming services: Sure, just select the first season and start there.

With streaming services it is up to you when you want to watch.

And that alone is why any streaming serrvices will always be better than dstv.

Thank goodness for F1tv as well. I can watch my F1 witout annoying cropped/small images where Dstv forces their ads onto screen.
And there is so much more content on which I can watch whenever I want. (pre-reace shows, interviews, analytics, etc)

Have a look at My Family Cinema. Have all the Content and more. Cost $3.49. About R50 per month. It runs on a 10mb/s line
