Are you sarcastically suggesting that it isn't sarcastic to suggest that the nano camera "can't take photo's?" Are you suggesting that the picture quality is so poor by other portable camera standards that it amounts to an inability to take photo's?

Excuse me for being dim.

I'm inclined to agree however; it seems a bit silly to slap on cameras that have been outdated on cellphones for...what? 4 years at least?
He's saying its video only.

Why are they saying the shuffle has no hardware changes? Are they shipping us all their old stock?

According to the mail I recieved the new shuffle has voice...

It speaks for itself. With the press of a button, the amazing VoiceOver* feature on the iPod shuffle tells you what song is playing, who performs it and even announces your playlists. Clip on a 2GB or 4GB** iPod shuffle and take up to 1,000 songs, plus loads of colour, wherever you go

It looks completely different too.

Maybe you are thinking of the second generation iPod shuffle?

The 3rd gen shuffle was introduced with VoiceOver; what has been released now is the first revision of the 3rd gen shuffle.

Anything with an 'i' in front of it is automatically overpriced.

It is pointless to compare the Dollar prices to their direct Rand value and then say it is too expensive here.

Anyone in the fruit export business will tell you that the price of fruits go up exponentially over the distance that you ship the fruits.

Apples are no exception.

The problem is not that the prices are high. the problem is that Core does not drop there prices or even keep them the same. for every new version of the ipod they RAISE the price!!! this is unacceptable.

I'm assuming your rant is directed at Core - then I agree.

If it is directed at Apple, you are missing the minor fact that they grew the iPod market into a multi-billion dollar beast selling hundreds of millions of units, pretty much from scratch. There really is no such thing as a portable mp3 player market, there is just the iPod market, no other manufacturer even comes close to matching Apple in this space.

Apple is quitting the iPod market anyway and focusing more & more on the iPhone and the mobile computing market, they just haven't released what they consider to be the breakthrough mobile computing product yet.

You only need to get about 6 or 7 iPod nanos to make it saving to get an economy class ticket overseas (say to Australia where the iPod prices are quite similar to the US - about R5000 for a return ticket), fly there yourself, buy the iPods and return (duty free - 10 % off) with the ipods.

Wonder where the money is going? Also they don't advertise iPods themselves on TV and the shops never have demos...

What? Back in 2000 I bought a Creative Nomad (rebranded Samsung Yepp) with 64MB of total RAM - it could only fit about 64min of music. There were no iPods around.
I remember being stopped by people asking what it was and where to buy one.
I later bought an iPod 3G 40GB -from eBay in 2003 - before Core had them - and then I purchased a Creative Zen Vision with a 640by480 screen which could play every current video format and did not require iTunes or a 3rd party program, I switched to that quite quickly for music too because the audio quality was better. Then came the Cowon A3 - 800 by 600 screen in 16.7 mil colours and 60GB (later 80GB) and playback of every conceivable video and audio file type including H264 in main profile (iPod only plays the most basic BP).

I understand that iPod has great design but enthusiasts quickly switch to alternatives (iPod won't play downloadable video, won't show me subtitles, won't let me play FLAC etc) - for the mainstream market the iPod is a great revenue earner for Apple and they won't just dump it - they're more than capable developing their iPhone and iPod lines. They're not in NASA's boat and this isn't a choice between Mars and Jupiter.

Right now I've reverted to listening to music on my Sharp cell phone. It has a DSP chip from Yamaha and the quality is very good when compared to an iPod. I just wish that Sharp would offer better video playback options - it has a gorgeous 854 by 480 screen which no other device of this size can match - in fact only Sony puts higher res screens in their pro $10,000 USD XDCAMS (1920by540). If I were to make a portable media player I'd get one of the multi touch Sharp AQOS 1024 by 480 screens and put a dual core ARM CPU and update codec support for H264 in Advanced Profile and MKV container with sub support. A 64GB SSD with that would make the thing a must have for enthusiasts. :)

Slightly OT, but where do you find a return flight to Aus for R5000?! It's a lot more expensive than that.

I didn't claim that Apple created the first mp3 player, only that they've dominated that market for a very long time.

If what you say is true, then we would all still all be buying and watching our movies on betamax. Technical superiority by playing the numbers game doesn't seem to have helped the products you name to make even the smallest of dents in the iPod's market dominance.

So good luck in selling your modified Sharp uberplayer to the 'enthusiast' market. Do you think you could get your mom to buy let alone use one?

I got the new 3G touch (32GB model) from the Regent Street Apple Store the UK last week :D

I was comparing it to my brother's 2G 32GB touch and it is much faster with opening applications etc. Very very nice, I am loving it!

I must say, voice control is such an amazing feature...I just had to switch the language to English (UK) from English (US) and it has never made a mistake with me yet! Very useful to just be able to leave the iPod in your pocket and never have to touch it (excuse the pun...) to change songs etc.

But when I consider that it cost 229 pounds, that is like between R2700-R2900. It is such a rip off here....
