Noticed a while ago that you had a yagi antennae for you data card. Would just like to querry with you if the prices i got is a fair deal or not.

LPDA-A0021 (800-2200MHz 11dBi LPDA 0.5m HDF 195 SMA m) is R520.00 excluding VAT

CAB-030 (10m HDF 195 SMA male to SMA female) is R273.00 excluding VAT

CAB-038 (30cm RG 174 Huawei connector to SMA f (3G)) is R154.00 excluding VAT.

What you think

Hi there,

In the absence of a reply from MTNDD, I actually went direct to Poynting several months ago for a data antenna and the pigtail, and the pricing you quote is just about right. Judging from your list though, I'm surprised you actually need three separate units, as Poynting can actually supply a pigtail (the patchcord between your antenna plug and your Huawei datacard) as a complete unit, ready-fitted with a Huawei-suitable plug; that unit was indeed about R273 plus VAT as you suggest. Poynting in Joburg carries a stock of ready-made pigtails for the most common cards, e.g. Huawei, Option, Novatel etc. Obviously the fewer junctions you have the better to avoid precious signal degradation.

May I offer a couple of quick tips? One is that these data antennas are highly directional: you need to know where your mast is, including a rough idea of its elevation, and angle it accordingly. Second is that it's obviously better outdoors, unless like me you are in a timber-thatch-roofed building, where there is no signal interference. Third, order the version with the shortest cable you are likely to need (if I'm not mistaken the standard version is 7 metres, but longer is possible). Poynting technicians pointed out (sorry...) that you could lose up to 1 dB of that precious signal gain for every metre of cable, and your original gain is a stated 11 dB (by way of comparison, the little (optional) clip-on antenna which you may have received with the datacard is apparently 2 db gain).

Good luck! Living in the bush and depending on good data, adding the antenna absolutely changed my life! From two bars on the dashboard software I'm now up to 4, sometimes 5, with far better latency. Doing one of the signal-strength tests often referred to in this forum shows a virtual DOUBLING of speed. Expensive, but well worth it if you are in a dodgy reception area.

I do apologize for the delay in my reply

Yes that's a very fair deal, I've just been a little tied up today

One of the guys at coverage was kind enough to email me a map of my area with the spots indicated where the masts are located and told me which are 3G

Just call up coverage on 0839001212(free call) and ask. Its as simple as that if you get a friendly operator who works there.

I live in Raslouw, Centurion.

I HAD excellent HSDPA speeds until something happened and nobody knows what.

I now have 0 3G signal and have to use EDGE. MTN was here at my office and they too are confused at what's going on as I have 3 towers in my vacinity...

Where can I buy an antenna and what unit must I choose.

I have the Huawei yellow 3G/HSDPA card.

I need my speed back up to where it was and since I'm stuck with MTN till the end of the year I just as well can buy the antenna in the meantime and solve my reception problems myself...
