Outgoing Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi sought to downplay his stepping down from the helm after 44 years in power, saying this was not a big deal and that the party was bigger than him.

The IFP is the fourth largest party in Parliament after growing its support to 3.38% during the May 8 election, thus landing itself 14 seats in the National Assembly.

It also dislodged the DA as the official opposition in its stronghold of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where it received 14.58% of the votes, equating to six seats in the provincial legislature.

Where was he going to steal from anyway? He is old and certainly has lots of regrets, he did a lot of damage in his days, probably saw the light in his later years.

There is usually something very wrong with someone who stays in a position for 44 years, even if he did something with the only funds he had access to, those of the IFP, how are you going to know? he ruled with an iron fist over there, ask Zanele ka Magwaza Msibi and Ziba Jiyane.

Even at his retirement he made sure to choose a successor who would obviously make sure his legacy is preserved.

Seems like you have no idea who he is after all? He has not always been this perfect picture of an old and wise politician. Go do some reading.
I've been around for 56years. You?
I've seen all here. I don't need to read up. I've lived it.

So he's disputing his role in conniving with the previous regime to perpetrate the violence of the 90s. Thinks he was unfairly demonised for his part.

The idea that he has a title of Prince in a Democracy tells me all about him. Just another tax looting scammer.

We have no kings, queens or princes in SA. Anyone claiming they are any of that should not be recognized because we are not some Constitutional monarchy with split kingdoms.

These idiots all kept these self given titles in order to get access to tax money, scammer all of them.

We all know it's gonna take years to undo the damage the Zuma years did...under Zuma stealing and corruption were cool. It's not too late to reverse that thinking. Yet.

I mean I sit here amongst the poorest of the poorest. They always vote ANC even though the ANC always lets them down. They moan about service delivery rarely.... they really don't give a crap if streets are full of litter and rubbish everywhere. Put quite honestly they were happy in their huts in the hills. This is new to them. So, they have no way of appreciating or looking after stuff. They don't know better
So, we are all going down here. Once proud residents have sold and left. Its such a stuff up.

Talking about the poorest of the poor perhaps we need to reflect on the Prince of Phindangene's record as a homeland leader, being one of the elders around here how would you rate him in relation to other homeland leaders like for example Lucas Mangope of Bophuthatswana?

What did he do for the people of KZN? What is his legacy as a homeland leader, taking into account his close friendship with the National Party?

Velenkosini Hlabisa takes the helm at IFP after Buthelezi's 44-year rule

Durban - Despite speculation that the sudden departure of long-time Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi from the party's presidency stage will spark jostling for power, the party's new leadership was elected unopposed, with Velenkosini Hlabisa taking over as party president.

He was elected in the early hours of Sunday during the party's ongoing 35th elective conference in Ulundi in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Hlabisa (54) a former school principal who is now the leader of the party in the KZN legislature and who has been on standby since 2017, was elected unopposed. His deputy will be Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi who was once seen as the next leader when the post of deputy president was created for the first time in 2012.

I saw this in the Citizen. Interesting times ahead. True to IFP form, no jostling for the job. Sorted with grace, order and dignity.
