We have a hp p2055d printer connected to a pc running slackware 13.1. Problem is, sometimes its fine, most of the time its problematic, spitting out garbage. Is there any place where i could perhaps download a driver for the printer? The driver for the p2050 is installed at the moment.

Has anyone else come across a problem as such which was not due to a driver? I'm not really familiar with linux, but i'll give it a go if i can source a troubleshooting manual (for the printer obviously, there's nothing wrong with linux!)

Are you using the hplip driver?
If not try it as it's a universal driver for most HP printers.

Should be in the repositories of your distribution.

Why is the pc running slackware as it not exactly the easiest linux distro?

Here's a working CUPS entry on Ubuntu:

Description: HP2055
Location: factory-linux
Printer Driver: Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2 Simplified
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://HP/LaserJet%20P2055d

Can you do the following for me please:
lsmod | grep usb

Paste the output here. What we are looking for is usblp, it is installed with cups but cause a lot of problems for various printers. If it is loaded then you can do a test by unloading it first and then printing a test page:
rmmod usblp

If it works now flawlessly you will have to blacklist that module so that it does not load in future. To blacklist it add it to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
