Polokwane - Thirty-four awaiting trial prisoners burned blankets and mattresses after their request to smoke cigarettes at the Mankweng police cells was refused, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.
Superintendent Motlafela Mojapela said the incident happened on Tuesday at about 18:00.
"They (prisoners) burned blankets and mattresses and locked themselves in the inner cell," he said.
"After a lengthy negotiation, the prisoners opened the cell door."
Nine prisoners were taken to the Mankweng hospital for treatment smoke inhalation, and later discharged.
No one was injured during the incident.
A case of malicious damage to property had been opened.
