Probe South African spying reports: Government

Probe! Probe! Probe! Probe! Probe!

Like a dog running after a car - but what to do when it stops?

You can bet that the cANCer government regularly spies on foreign diplomats in South Africa, it's something that all countries do.

Its all a DA plot who are in cahoots with the British :p

Seriously though what advantage is there in spying on SA, how could the the UK benefit :)

^ um the British authorities were keeping close tabs on Qaddafi and continue to keep tabs on Santos. It is inevitable that there known associates will be caught in a net

A country really cannot expect to have its sovereign privity respected if its head of state is in the pocket of a company that forms part of the executive operations of another sovereigns government. There is a word starting with a T to describe receiving a retainer of 500k a year to act in dereliction of sworn duty in the protection of a foreign power.

If only they were so serious about protecting the basic human rights with regards to the privacy of ordinary citizens here in our fair country then I would think they had a leg to stand on. I'd like to know exactly how much South African's in general are being spied on.

For all I know not at all, but with SA recently indirectly involved in the scandal with MTN in the middle east, knowing how active our gov is in the business world, I do not have much hope of any privacy.

It's just too easy these days to take the stance that people must "deal with it" that they have zero privacy the moment they log on.

These days you don't even have to plant a bug in an apartment or car to listen-in any more. The vibrations of glass windows are recorded and "translated". And there are more advanced methods available to the big boys. Very few places where a private conversation can be had when active surveillance is in place. One must assume there are surveillance. The problem is that with the great leaps in technology most people will never know what the latest greatest tech/methods used against them are capable of. The US will not let other nations know what they are truly capable of ... so you just cannot ever be sure. We will only find out years later that we were spied on all along using tech/methods we thought couldn't exist.

The only way to deal with this is to come down very very hard on anyone caught doing so. Very hard. That is the only deterrent. A Government must know that it WILL fall when caught. Presidents/leaders must be forced to resign. If not, then the battle is already lost as there will always be ways to do this. When you discover one way and block it these guys will find another, until you hit them so hard that they dare no look for another.

Yahoo!: "Democracy demands accountability. Recognising the important role that Yahoo! can play in ensuring accountability, we will issue later this summer our first global law enforcement transparency report, which will cover the first half of the year. We will refresh this report with current statistics twice a year."

Now we are getting somewhere. Thanks Mr Snowden.
