I have had 384K ADSL for the past 2 weeks. I've been running IPCop with an ADSL PCI modem (Conexant) and its been working fine from day 1.

My connection suddenly dropped last night with the following entry in the RED (modem) logs:

Code:
20:11:26	pppd[404]	LCP terminated by peer
20:11:26	pppoe[406]	Session 20487 terminated -- received PADT from peer
20:11:26	pppoe[406]	Sent PADT
20:11:26	pppd[404]	Modem hangup
20:11:26	pppd[404]	Connection terminated.
20:11:26	pppd[404]	Connect time 1440.4 minutes.
20:11:26	pppd[404]	Sent 4245018 bytes, received 28036040 bytes.
20:11:29	pppd[404]	Exit.

I have "Persistant Connection" activated, so it tried to dial up and the following was logged.

Code:
20:11:29	red: Connectioncheck	will connect again
20:11:29	red: CnxPCI ADSL	starting
20:11:29	red: CnxPCI ADSL	already loaded
20:11:29	red: CnxPCI ADSL	waiting for sync
20:11:31	red: CnxPCI ADSL	sync done
20:11:31	pppd[5911]	pppd 2.4.2 started by root, uid 0
20:11:31	pppd[5911]	Using interface ppp0
20:11:31	pppd[5911]	Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
20:12:06	pppoe[5912]	Timeout waiting for PADO packets
20:12:06	pppd[5911]	Modem hangup
20:12:06	pppd[5911]	Connection terminated.
20:12:06	pppd[5911]	Exit.
20:12:10	red: Connectioncheck	RED fail to connect
20:12:10	red: CnxPCI ADSL	stop

I then called my ISP this morning. They say they dont have a problem and their side, but said that they noticed that an "Edge Router" was down and I should call telkom. I did , and after trying to explain that I DONT use a Telkom Router but IPcop... (sigh)....they decided to log a fault.

They also gave me a Telkom ADSL guest account to try....Nothing doing.

If they send a technician out here and the problem is on my side, I would have to pay for the callout. I'm just trying to avoid that, so if anybody has any advice......it would appreciated.

If I try to dial up now, the error logs I get is as follows:

Code:
12:02:33	red: CnxPCI ADSL	starting
12:02:33	red: CnxPCI ADSL	already loaded
12:02:33	red: CnxPCI ADSL	waiting for sync
12:02:35	red: CnxPCI ADSL	sync done
12:02:35	pppd[3929]	pppd 2.4.2 started by root, uid 0
12:02:35	pppd[3929]	Using interface ppp0
12:02:35	pppd[3929]	Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
12:03:10	pppoe[3930]	Timeout waiting for PADO packets
12:03:10	pppd[3929]	Modem hangup
12:03:10	pppd[3929]	Connection terminated.
12:03:10	pppd[3929]	Exit.
12:03:13	red: Connectioncheck	RED fail to connect
12:03:14	red: CnxPCI ADSL	stop

Absolutely nothing was changed on my side. I was actually using the connection when it suddenly dies.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Got a call back from Telkom. Problem is on their side.

Now the wait begins.....or should I say "continues"

The part that really ticks me off is that it took them all day to tell me what I initially told them this morning. So, absolutely nothing has been done until now.

I'm only on ADSL for 2 weeks.....and I'm already regretting it.

I dont know......its still not resolved :-(

My ISP tells me that, from what they can see, an "Edge Router" is down. He even gave me the IP address this morning.

I couldn't connect to either my IS or SAIX account last night - I gave up at 3AM this morning.
Line synced perfectly but it was unable to establish a call.
This happened a couple of weeks ago as well.
I'm in the East Rand

Does your problem still persist? I just tried again... Still no luck :(

The timeout for PADO packets always indicates a problem on their side, FYI. ;)
Oh, and don't mention the IPCop, it just confuses the hell out of them. Just play dumb and say it's a 3rd party modem.

It's working fine now but I'm not going to reconnect to check - I did that last night and couldn't get back online. :D

This is the log the Billion modem gave me when Telkom's network was bust:

1/1/2000 1:51:4> netMakeChannDial: err=-3000 rn_p=804286b8
1/1/2000 1:51:33> Last errorlog repeat 10 Times
1/1/2000 1:51:33> Call Failed

Thank goodness. I was beginning to worry as it was STILL down when I left for work this morning.

Yah, I realised that after I spoke to the first guy.... He went silent for about 5 seconds when he heard my response to "what modem do you have?".

Lol yeah telkom really needs to get the "tech" in the tech support they offer!

One of my friends got adsl a short while back, and his telephone number mysteriously changed!? he phoned them and they asked him what router he is using!! as if using a specific type of router can change your telephone number!

"What router do you have" is the first question they ask.

In the end, when the guy was saying "click start, control panel, blah blah blah"....I was just saying "yes, yes, uh, yes" without really doing anything. What part of "I dont run Windows doesn't he understand"?? When I figured all he wanted was for me to create a "telkom guest account".....I quickly did it myself.

You're right......Telkom tech support needs to hire some techies with just a BIT more knowledge than whats written in front of them.

When i just hear the Telkom hold music then......."Hi, my name is XXXXX.....how may I offer you excellent", I want to freak!
