Last week I spent a nice week at the University of Pretoria. 3G connection was perfect. Back at my place (Midstream Estates), where I get a 1 or 2 bar 3G signal, the connection is also stable.

Back at work at the Kentron site things started looking funny on Monday. Frequent disconnects. Sometimes I would get a stable connection but no data would flow. After disconnecting and reconnecting everything worked again. When connected I could download at about 40 to 50kbyte/s. Yesterday things went worse. Many disconnects but I still had a good stretches to up and download email.

Today all I get is Error 619( at 2 to 3 bars). The Dash doesn't like this and crashes regularly. So far I have not been able to send 1 single byte, via 3G, over the internet.

I am currently connected to Denel's super fast (NOT!) network. I guess that if anyone else in the same area is battling that they won't get as far to post anything if they don't have a 2nd connection.

Does anyone know what is going on? Are they playing with new firmware again?

Here in Doringkloof the connection is stable, but not nowhere near 3G speeds!

I bought an HSDPA card, but thus far haven't been able to connect at higher speeds than 250k! Yesterday evening in Centurion Mall it was no better! Am really starting to get p1ssed off with this crap! :(

It it is now 11h08. Could now, for the first time, make an actual GPRS connection. Hope it lasts

Haven't checked my 3G but my GPRS has been rock solid since 11am.

Had problems, again, today. 3G blue light started to flash and I tried to reconnect. Not a chance. Then I went over to GPRS. Worked stable for a few hours and then dead as well. I started it up again about an hour ago and all was fine.

Did somebody trip over a cable again?

Dear VMS

Does your Linemanager know you are breaching the security policy by using wireless comms in a security area and that its illegal to use such a device at Kentron??

Also in Centurion (Die Hoewes), apparently getting great signal, but the connection for the last week or so has been horrendous. Frequent disconnects, often only getting GPRS etc. Haven't run any speed tests (mainly because it takes so long that I get bored and start doing other things).

Currently at work and don't have the card with me, but will try again tonight from home and post back with more details if the problem remains.

hahaha ...in fact they do know. But I am responsible with it and mostly don't have the network/LAN connected when on 3G. There is a whole list of do's and don'ts. But we are also not allowed to bring in cameras, yet I have a 6680 with 2 of them :)

There are a few of us that use GPRS based comms over here. Their internet is extremely slow and if I want to download something I don't want to wait. If my line manager instructs me to stop using it I will probably obey, but so far nobody sees me as a security risk, which I am not. They should rather stop these people receiving and sending serious megabytes of crap...or worse, a critical document as plain text.

Just remember that you can buy (or try to buy) security but you cannot buy trust and loyalty.

Back to the 3G status... Something is happening again. I also get very good signal, but when it goes down it dies completely and then suddenly come back on without any reboots or anything. Hopefully it goes away like before.

Currently I am not paying anything extra (because I use very little of it).

But jalize has made me start to wonder about the policies here. I work fairly safe and secure on my side but I cannot say the same for the other users.

I currently have the 3G card. Bright and visible. But the new cellphones are sold with cables and Bluetooth interfaces. So just enable your Bluetooth connection with your cell in your pocket and there you go, ...private connection.

I normally disconnect my LAN cable if I need to get internet-on-steroids. I have monitors running showing me activity ... but then I cannot say this of the other users. Will have to approach management and get the final verdict. If I have to park my 3G card then I will do so.
