Hi Guys, this is my predicament.. I was going in for a standard setup Logitech Z5500 with a quad core HTPC connected to a projector.

Until i realized how many gadgets i have: PS3, Wii, HTPC and maybe a HD PVR later.

With a little research i discovered the best way to connect would be to get an amp and decent set of 2.1 floor standing speakers for now, i figure i can buy the subs etc later.

I have narrowed it down to:

1. Marantz SR 4001 AV receiver, 7 x 80W all including packaging and cables. HDMI input and 1 output. - R3000 (2nd hand)
2. JAMO Speaker System Black S416HCS+SUB 200 (R6000 - Dionwired)

Questions:

- Are these components together any good for an aspiring audiophile?
- Will this amp support all the gadgets above?
- Will the amp handle video?
- The amp doesn't handle audio via the hdmi so how can i connect the sound to the ps3?
- Is the amp sufficiently powered for this speaker set?
- Should i go for a brand new Onkyo SR500 - (R4499) or Denon 1907 (R3999) or maybe something else?

If anyone has any advice or components for sale please let me know.

Please guys any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

This is something I'm anal about and if you want good quality the amp & dvd player alone might not fit into your budget. For starters look at NAD, Rotel, Onkyo, Yamaha. Speakers are another story.

Hi ponder, thanks for the quick response. I know what you mean, you have to pay for quality and my with the budget that small i have to make do..

but for what i have right now are the components any good? Or should i be looking at something else altogether?

im also finding it hard to test components out as i cant find suitable places in Durban who demo this stuff.

Any ideas?

There are two places in Umhlanga you can go demo kit. The first ones name I cannot remember but it is in East Coast Radio house below mugg & bean on the ground floor. The second place is Audio Excellence about 100m away in another park/complex.

With sound it's pretty much subjective and everybody has their own preferences so the best thing to do is to go demo the stuff.

Maybe just start off with a good AV Receiver & two good speakers as you can always add to the system as time/money permits.
