When will the iTunes SA store start stocking proper applications. Low rated US apps tend to be very prominent in the SA store. When it comes to the music store, Apple relies on the good will of those who have local distribution rights (and i think Apple can actually bend some arms). But as for the apps, Apple have complete control. WHY HAVE THEY NOT PLACED EVERY SINGLE US APP IN THE SA STORE.

I have been in direct contact with some app developers; they say they don't know why apple chose to not publish their apps in SA and other jurisdictions.

I see this a a form of 3rd World enslavement. They will sell us the hammer and will only sell nails up to 2 inches.

never. apparently the cost of getting a few papers signed and slapping down a few containers of servers outweighs the possible benefits.

Yep sucks. However you can get a US iTunes account by following the instructions on the iPhone tips & tricks thread. It's quick and easy.

It won't happen. The local music industry in SA is too stupid to realise that this would be a good thing and make them money.

I think it has less to do with local artists and more for the international commercial/financial quirks that stop us from having Android Market, BB AppCentre (or whatever you call it) and ofcourse iStore. No doubt there's a greedy local distributor who do not have the tech savvy to make this happen and are too stingey to be left out of the revenue stream.

I work at a major record label in South Africa. Believe me, we would kill to get the iTunes store opened up here in SA. Apple have repeatedly expressed their lack of interest. Hopefully that will change soon! We can only hope!

My sources have told me that the reason why there is no music store in SA is because the contract for digital distribution in SA has been assigned to Sony + the game apps have to be approved by the film and publication board south africa who charges R 5000 for approving a game.

Years ago I heard Apple say that 2011 would be the date. I was very disappointed. Now I would be glad if it even happened by then.

I have better faith in Google. I reckon they'll bring out Movie and Show renting services here before Apple do, even though Google has barely begun internationally.

EDIT: When I say Google, I mean through YouTube.

Until then, you could just support Rhythm Records ...

I have similar frustrations with Amazon's Kindle. Due to distribution rights issues the latest fiction/novels from best selling authors cannot be purchased locally. Many non-fiction books are also not availabel locally. I tried the US iTunes Store type workaround with Kindle but Amazon traced my IP address back to SA and blocked my access (unless I could fax them a copy of my US ID). I've got a strong feeling Apple will start doing IP tracing also and then we are stuffed without a US VPN. The ownership tracking patent application by Apple will make this easy.

That will more than likly be blocked in SA just like the apple store

And the only option remaining will be piracy. It's crazy that normal, law-abiding people who want to pay for music have no option to actually do so.

I never knew any of this.... iv been browsing the app store checking out what i plan to get for my new touch, so tonight i decide to create a itunes acc and what ya know, i cant have any of it.

i mean seriously , its ridiculous

they should put a large banner on their site that says:

please support piracy by downloading from a trusted pirating website as getting anything from us is not possible in your country... have a nice day

fusionbrad ... use Nokia's Ovi music store. Nokia sells unprotected MP3's and it works perfectly on the Touch. I now do it legally this way. No need for the iTunes Music Store in SA anymore.

When I try to setup a US itunes account it doesn't NOT give the option for NONE in the payment options like the various instruction websties show. Any clues what I'm doing wrong? http://www.getusitunesaccount.com/ site I'm using.

EDIT - Problem solve. Method used: RTFM + slowly.

Buy a free app in the USA store,
choose create new account
The "none" option will then be available under credit cards.
