Good news about South Africa's 50ppm diesel ban

South Africa's proposed ban on the sale of diesel with a sulfur content higher than ten parts per million (10 ppm) will come into effect in about four years.

That is according to feedback from the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (Fiasa).

this is good news, though only 15 years behind Europe... :p
Been asking for ages why we cant get 10ppm Diesel in the Western Cape.

I'm starting to see more 10ppm sales. Sasol, Total and Engen are already selling it.

Oh 100%... but as an example the truck stop I use only stopped selling predominantly 500ppm about 3 years ago. Many residential petrol stations will probably stop selling 50ppm in 4 years or so, or at least scale it back to 1 pump.. the truck stops on the other hand who are the largest distributor of diesel will be selling it for a good while longer than that.

I thought all sasols only have 10ppm?

Probably not, depending where they are located, Secunda which is their CTL refinery is the only refinery in SA that produces or is capable of producing 10ppm diesel. Almost all of the 10ppm or whatever will be sold when 50ppm is phased out will be imported as SA simply does not have the refining capability to produce it. As much as I think it is a good idea, we still live in Africa, where simply forcing an industry to not use something it has been using for decades or forcing it to use something else it isn't capable of or hasn't been moving towards has massive consequences.

Because I love my Ucount points, I have to wait for Caltex/Astron to have 10ppm available in the Western Cape /Cape Town

"Petrol cars generally produce more carbon dioxide than diesel for every kilometre driven, contributing more to climate change.

However, diesel vehicles emit harmful particulates and nitrogen compounds that have a direct negative impact on human health and the environment."

This is exactly why I would not even consider buying a diesel vehicle. We have long established that climate change is a hoax which only idiots take seriously and even if it did exist, there is nothing we could do about it anyway. Cancer, on the other hand, is very real and there is a definite correlation between it and harmful particulates.

Petrol engines are sheer German engineering excellence while the diesel engine was created by a Frenchman. Do you trust the French with anything besides food and wine? Diesel engines are putrid, smelly, low combustion things.

You cannot beat the thrill of opening the throttle on either a small car or bike then roaring down the highway while a diesel engine will always just chug along, regardless of whether it is turbocharged or not.

I understand the necessity of diesel engines for trucks or buses, though I wish we would just return to railway transportation and ban most trucks, but there is no logical reason for anyone only interested in private transportation to ever drive a diesel engine based SUV or bakkie when the petrol version of the model is vastly superior.

There is a reason why even large American bakkies mostly feature gasoline-based V8's, not awful diesel engines. Gasoline engines are a symbol of personal luxury and freedom while diesel engines are just plain old communism.

This isnt good for the injectors, lower sulfur has less lubricant, will cause more wear and tear down the line.

Some diesel owners throw some 2 stroke oil into their tank of their BMW.
