You can't get to nr 1 without playing well.
True, but then again if you look at it from the angle of players, the likes of Chanderpaul, Clarke & AB have been at the top of the rankings for years now while hiding at #5, a position so easy to thrive from that even the likes of Smith, Mathews&Root are world beaters from right now, as were the Mike Hussey&VVS a short while ago. Are they great bastmen in my eyes? No. Only 1-3 count, 4 if you're being generous. Circumstances do conspire to lift you above what you deserve. Greece were European football champions 10 years ago. Sir Alex won EPL titles with squads that should've been fortunate to make the top #3. Now SA have failed to convince hosting India, were embarassed by AUS, coerced the ball into performing magic in SL before bending over for the rain Gods to oblige, and now voluntarily or involuntarily they are batting possibly two sessions earlier than they should be because of the umpires. Was a draw possible in this match? From where I'm standing yes. The bowling yesterday was crap. Going by your quote above, I'm of the strong opinion that SA have not been playing well at all. They last did that against Pakistan.

Chatara to Amla, OUT, Chatara's temptation has worked! It's wide and can be left alone but Amla drives in the air straight to Sibanda at cover!

HM Amla c Sibanda b Chatara 4 (27b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.81

60 overs later still going 2.5 runs against lowly Zimbabwe, while 3 wickets down with a 100+ run deficit! Kirsten&Boucher would've been moving the innings along better! Bowling was crap, batting uninspiring. You'd be hardpresed to argue they are playing well. No?

Let me guess, ZCF. We would be a lot better off with Tsolikele in the side?

Bowling was OK'ish but not their best. Would not go so far as saying it was crap.

What's the pitch doing?

If India were receiving that kind of bowling in England Kohli&Pujara would've had tripple tons to end their shocking form! Like I said, but for the umpires, Zim should've scored 320+ and Proteas innings would definitely have started after lunch today making a draw a certainty.

Pitch is doing nothing for the seamers, but added pace of a more focused Steyn&Morkel should've been enough to knock over ZIM for less than 250. I wouldn't so far as to say it's too assistting for spinners either.
