What the fsck is with this go-slow against Zimbabwe?

I'm gobsmacked by SA's approach to this game.

I wish I could find a reason for their stodginess, but alas I must concur that their approach is bewildering. Last 10 overs = 10/1???

2.45pm South Africa scored 56 runs in over 30 overs in that session. De Kock was the one scoring after lunch but once he fell, Duminy and Philander blocked or left nearly everything as the hosts persisted with that line and length outside off. Seven down SA, catch you again after 20 minutes

Just 7 sessions left. If Zimbabwe can bat for 4 sessions this will be a draw, and they will be very happy with that.

Brett has some foresight: "Well done to Zimbabwe so far, playing to their strengths, the pitch, and SA insecurity. However, I see SA getting 150 run lead, bowling Zimbabwe out for 250 again, and reaching the 100 required by tea on day 5."

Perhaps while Steyn is at the wicket we have a chance?

Proteas+Springboks=Dull+Insipid. In 22+ years that equation has never been disproven on the field of play. Not sure why one would be bewildered.

Only thing I can think is that they feel there is plenty of time left, so they are just playing it safe and leaving the wide balls. Zim noticed this early on and is more than happy to oblige them, hoping to draw out the SA innings as long as possible.

It does seem like Steyn now wants to get on with it, mind you.

it does a horrible pitch to bat on. Its horrible cricket to watch but its our game plan, we'll probably get about a 150-200 run lead and i dont see zim scoring that amount on a pitch like this, imagine what it'll be doing on day 5.

Number 1 team in the world, playing it safe against Zimbabwe? It's bad form that our strike bowler needs to come out and take it to them, and it's not the first time either...

Not a very smart tactic, I agree, but it is the only vaguely logical explanation I could come up with.

I think amla will declare as soon as JP gets his half century. Probably would've done so too if he'd done it sooner with a smaller lead.

Then again it looks dark out there so Amla must be thinking no point forcing th eissue if I won;t be able to use Steyn&Morkel so I'll leave it till tomorrow mornign if I can.

Zohaib has a strategy: "This game could very well be drawn. All that Zimbabwe have to do is bat whole day tomorrow and first session day after. Easier said than done."

Be gone, ye pessimist! Saffer master plan are all coming together rather nicely. 140+ lead will be putting immense pressure on a fragile Zim line up

Stiaan: "How good is Tinashe Panyangara? in his 29 overs, conceded only 35 runs, with no boundaries??!! The number 1 team in the world could not hit 1 boundary off his bowling!! Credit to that man!"
I suppose Stiaan is trolling too right? Who wouldn't be embarrassing as a#1 side that the batsmen couldn't nick a single boundary off an opposition seamer's 29 overs?

It's been difficult watching this today... the ideal would have been to be in a position to declare about now but, as correctly stated, the light will prevent us from using our quicks.

Now we are forced to bat out the day - if we can!
