Thoughts on the SA side for tomorrow's game at Centurion?

Has it been finalised? Looking on SS for a teamsheet now but don't see it.

EDIT: Oh, was this a "what do you think the team should look like" question...

Agree with Wall. QdK in for van Wyk. Rest of the team like this.

1 - Amla
2 - QdK
3 - Faf
4 - AB
5 - David "in the arc, out the park" Miller
6 - Japes
7 - Behardien
8 - Vern
9 - Steyn
10 - Morkel
11 - Immie

That is the strongest possible team and should form the core of the CWC starting XI.

Well well well, the "ban" turned out to be more of a miracle since we all seem to be thinking along the same lines now....yet somehow remain in disagreement:D

1. Abraham Benjamin De Villiers being considered at #3
I agree with this.

2. Rilee Rossouw not good enough
Someone who is brilliant at FC/List A does not just turn into a bad batsman, but I agree he is not our answer at opener.

3. Kyle Abbott not good enough
Saddens me to say, he has had enough chances, he is not taking wickets and not proving to be a very successful death bowler.

4. Farhaan Berhadien appreciated
He is in the team as a batsman, but he is doing better as a bowler and fieldsman. But yes, If Mclaren does not get a chance, Farhaan is our best bet at number 7

5. Phangiso appreciated
Did nothing miraculous. also did nothing wrong. Tahir remains our number 1 spinner.

6. Morkel rightly viewed as being overrated
Nobody rates him as a fantasic bowler, he does generate pace and bounce and is a absolute must in our bowling attack.

7. Faf rightly viewed as being overrated
He is overrated and inconsistent. but we have no one better. Believe he should come in at 6.

8. Our bench strength is a weakness and we have little quality depth
We have a bigger problem in our bowling department than batting. We do have batting depth.

9 Proteas bowling upfront and at the death among the weakest of the top sides, despite Steyn's presence
See my top post

10.At leats someone missed "the outcast"!
Some of your post do hold value. Others are absurd ;)

The only thing remaining to be accepted is that QdK should be dropped down the order (... and you will come round to that too trust me;)). After Miller did well I would have thought guys would suggest that he should open alongside Amla. Alas he only gets bumped up only to 4.... Poor QdK.
Miller should not open. I feel number 4 and even 5 suits him.
QDK is fine at opening, But he does also remind me of Gibbs who was a little inconstant at times, but a big hitter once he gets going. QDK is still young, he has done brilliantly so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But both Levi and Ingram are breathing down his neck.

Maybe that will all change when tonight, Bafana beat Ghana 2-0 and Senegal beat Algeria 1-0 and Bafana progress to the next round...
Little chance. Shakes did a Heyneke+Domingo. Picked a weird starting a XI. Possible but it will be a shock.

Thoughts on the SA side for tomorrow's game at Centurion?
Amla, Miller, AB, JP, QdK, Faf, Farhaan, Philander, Steyn, Phangiso, Tahir

I don't understand why we'd pick Parnell, Morkel & Abbott if we know they'll fetch where they bowl - upfront, middle overs & at the death. We all agree this WI squad has been horrible, but if they're struggling against this WI side, imagine the strong one, or the other sides in the tournament.

One guy said "25 overs of spin we're not SL". I agree, but at least Phangiso&Tahir will give us 20 overs. Everyone's scared stiff of bowling those other three for more than 7 overs, so why not?

We've lost many a WC knock out match counting on JP. Miller has won very few from there, so why not Faf?

I already mentioned INgram but someone told me he was on Kolpak now so little chance.

You would swap Qdk/RR for Levi?

Maybe I haven't been putting my point accurately enough. So instead of saying QdK should drop down the order, I should be asking instead:

How many runs do you think Amla+QdK will get in the first 10 overs vs the following common opening bowling combinations:

1. Malinga+Dilshan/Herath
2. Boult+Southee
3. Starc+Johnson
4. Narine+Roach
5. Jimmy+Broad/Finn
6. Junaid+Irfan
7. Bhuvi+Ashwin/Shami

It looks like AB will be rested for the 5th ODI. Was reading an article on Supersport (Neil Manthorp's column) and came across this paragraph

Later, during the morning’s play, I received a Tweet from another man asking what I thought about the fact that he had paid R160 to watch his hero and hometown favourite, AB de Villiers, in the final match at Centurion. Both men had bought their tickets a long time before the series had been decided and the Proteas implemented their rest and rotation policy.

I think they will do quite good to be honest, how many 100's have QDK made since opening?
i would rather let QDK open against those bowlers than Miller who has never opened the batting before.

Ok. If he doesn't come right between now and the next two warm up games, then I hope Domingo makes a call that one of these (AB, Faf&Miller) must open with Amla.

My only worry is he has failed far too many times, passing 50 just 10 times out of 35.

We've never been afraid to experiment before. If Parnell can open, with Albie coming in at first drop, then so can Miller. Granted the attack was rubbish :D

Too little time before the WC to change crucial batting order in my opinion. I am also for Faf coming in at 5 or 6 rather but he has been doing no 3 for a while now. Just now whoever replaces him at 3 fails, and then we sit with a problem. Fafs record in ODIs is actually poor...but there is no one else at the moment.

I would like to see Miller coming in top 5 again next game. Maybe number 4 if AB is not playing unless they give Faf no3 and Rilee no4 or vice versa and let MvW or QdK keep.

QDK has open for all his professional career. Its where he prefers to play. 6 100's in 35 games with an average of 43.58 and a strikerate of 88.42. Give me that everytime thank you for very much.

TBH he reminds me very much of Adam Gillchrist. Also a bit inconsistent but when he came of he would win the game for aus. We have hash to be mr consistent, no reason tinker with QDK imho.

Opening and being aggressive is high risk, no doubt about it. Looking at the Aussie openers, Finch and Warner have similar / slightly worse records than QdK. But getting off to a positive start is imperative nowadays...we can't post competitive totals if we start with a low risk plodder. It puts too much pressure on the guys coming in next.

No side has got the perfect team going into to the WC...opening is a common issue as well as back of the innings bowling.

I agree, not sure since when is a average of almost 44, SR of 88 and 6 centuries is bad....Faf and JP combined gives me 6 ODI centuries.....

How many runs are we expecting from the openers in the 1st 10 overs? Are we looking for 70-80/2 or happy with 45-50/0.

There are too many variables in my opinion to say how many runs is acceptable. Personally, I would love it for the top 3 (#, QdK, Blaf) to create a platform in 25-30 overs to enable AB, Miller and co to up the scoring rate.

Yip agree with you guys, # & QdK opening average is among the top three since 2013 with an average RR above 5, they average higher than any other current opening pair apart from India (10+ innings).... so no idea why the doubt.

My single biggest concern is Faf, but we all know he can come off and we need him to. A little disappointed in Abbot's form as well, hope they drill them to the ground how to bowl decent Yorkers and not full tosses all the time.

My top 6 that I would like to see tomorrow...

Amla
QdK
Faf
AB
Miller

If AB is rested then RR comes in and bats at 3.
