It does vary per country. In SA the statement has to be true and it has to be in the public's interest in order to not be defamatory. Just because a person believes informing the public what Johnny did is "doing the right thing" is not a defence in SA law.
I believe you also have to prove malice? For instance what I wrote about this guy was not even aimed to defame him it was already known by 7 of the 10 people I cced in I was not the only person told about this guys actions when people are mistreated they have a tendency to want to speak about it.
My main intention was to shame the people who kept standing by this guy despite all that he did and he did and continues to do some nasty stuff. It was also to try help those who were still staying around me and to let him know he will be exposed if he does things to anyone else.So all purely altruistic motives lol.

I was sued - lost pretty much everything - my house, property, and then my wife left me.

It was worth it. The only thing left was another house I had in a trust - neither of them could get their hands on that.

You may be panicking a little too much.
Bringing a civil case to the high Court is a costly business.

Libel type of cases are difficult to prove, and even when done, the awards are very low.
The tricky thing is a costs award, which will often be higher than the libel award.

I suspect the other party may be shaking the tree to see what falls out.
They may even send a letter of demand via their attorneys - a bit of sabre rattling.

If you receive a summons, then it's become real as they would have appointed counsel by then.

Libel would be easier to prove than slander.
I put it in print via email so its not like a he said she said.I am back to panicking mostly about the costs award. How low is very low I have barely 10k to my name.I can't hire a lawyer and I don't think legal aid covers these kind of cases. So I would be defending myself.

As I asked earlier, have you received a summons / court date yet?
