Best ways to protect yourself from spam calls in South Africa

The Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC) wants to tackle the scourge of spam calls in South Africa, but residents remain vulnerable to receiving unsolicited calls until its plan is implemented.

However, there are several ways South Africans can better protect themselves from spam, including signing up to an existing opt-out registry, installing call screening apps, and being wary of where they submit their contact information.

As my Block list gets longer, the fewer Spam calls I get, takes a little effort - but it works. Only get the occasional spam call these days.

Close your account and then block the number. These days you also need to have a Whatsapp blocklist and set up email rules

The only problem with Truecaller is that it distributes your contact list. I would be p'd off if you distributed my contact but you see it acceptable to use an app that is supposedly protecting you to distribute my contact number.

The only solution is an opt in only option. Opt out doesn't work. Big fines for opting you in without your permission.

RICA and POPIA will sort this out...........yeah right as everything the anc enforces it is useless, a waste of money and doesn't apply to them.

Yeah, just embrace Truecaller.

Also, on iPhones, set them to Silence Unknown Callers, with the Do Not Disturb with Allow Repeated Calls enabled (in case of emergency - will only let people who re-dial you within 3 mins and most call centres just move on and try again much later). On Do Not Disturb you can add the numbers you want to allow at all times.

The only downside is if you're in a job where you frequently get calls from unknown people or when a courier, etc is trying to deliver something. Otherwise, this works well.
