Impress Watch, a popular Japanese press release website, reports that Sony spoke about pricing of PS3 games after the TGS press event, revealing that games will be in the 8,800 to 9,800 yen range, which is about $75 to $84. The prices could even out in the states, but $70 for a PS3 game still isn’t a good sign.

Sony’s reason is the increasing development costs (of course). I could also see that one of the problems is that games are using the Blu-Ray format, which is quite expensive to manufacture at the moment.

The high price of a console is one thing, it’s new technology and cannot be expected to be a bargain, games however, are something the consumers are meant to buy a lot of, and that’s not gonna happen at $70, which could prove disastrous for small time developers (coupled with the rising development costs).

I think this quote from their forums sums it all up:
Ouch… A bit pricey. $80 for a game. Is this the last playstation we will see?

It contrasts nicely with ms who are seemingly trying to push independent development.

Still Sony has got the install base, and the brand loyalty, and the PS3 is going to be a superior system. So itwill probably win out once again.

As per the Sony online store the games will retail at around $59.99.

Hope this is a clear indication for the future as well though coz it might push the other game makers to push up their prices too.

they do that because those three places make up 90% of their market

we make up less than 1% so why would they come here?

They'd be idiots to cut off the rental market. Then again it IS Sony . . .

out of those "thousands" of PS2's in SA how many are actually legal? ie. not chipped? says a LOT about our commitment to piracy hey?

by the way, the info we get is from Sony's yo-yo tricks they keep playing by not giving us proper pricing details. As usual they are deceiving the public.

Last week's excitement over Sony dropping the price of the PS3 in Japan may prove to be short lived with news coming out of the Tokyo Game Show that some PS3 games may cost nearly $100. Sources indicate that several PS3 games will retail for around $76 to $84, well above the current generation's $40 to $50; the price increase can be chalked up to increased development costs. Sony seems to have a knack for shooting themselves in the foot, no? – Nicholas Deleon
