Hi All,

I have read a number of topics on this issue and have learnt that it is possible to connect a PS3 console to the Internet without going through a PC or laptop.

However, what I did not get is how to actually do this.

Firstly, do you only need a router in which to stick your dongle/3G modem to connect or will it not work? I have been to a couple of tech stores (hi-fi, incredible, game) and the consultants were not absolutely sure if that is all you need. So, perhaps this is where we should start.

Secondly, what does one need to set up the system? What hardware does one need?

Thirdly, what does one need to do to get Internet running on the console? Can you please provide instructions with pictures or a link for the instructions if possible.

I need this info. to help me decide whether or not I should purchase a Cell C 3G modem.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is possible to connect the PS3 to a 3G router via a wired or wireless connection. I have been running mine over a wireless connection for a few months now.

If you want to use the Cell C 3G modem, just get one of the compatible routers. There is a forum thread for this.

Setup on PS3 is dead simple and the networking wizard should be simple enough not to require specific instuctions.

Thank you for the quick reply gadnex.

I will be going for the dongle.

If I could only find that thread with the instructions...

Not sure about connecting a 3G dongle straight into a router (I do know of modems/routers that have a USB port though).
As gadnex said, connecting the PS3 to either a wired or wireless connection is rather simple. Wired is just 'plug-n-play' and then follow the wizard. Wireless is slightly trickier but also rather straightforward using the wizard.

Here is a link to the forum thread with 3G routers compatible with the Cell C dongle:
[thread=273744]Routers to use with Cell C mobile internet[/thread]

Personally I have the TP-Link MR3420 and it works great thus far.

If you really need to see the instructions before you purchase, just refer to the online PS3 user manual. If I remember correctly it is well documented and has screenshots where required.

Thanx.

I will have a look.

I will have a look at my manual at home first. Thanx for reminding me about the network set up instructions in the manual.

I have just looked at the link and its looking damn good.

I just might buy the router first before I buy the 3G dongle and before the price of this router goes through the roof.

Cheapest I've seen. And I have been looking. These things cost in the region of about R1,500 and you could get one for R899 if you are lucky.

Hope I can get it.

Thanx

Orderr via bidorbuy. http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/2952...N_3G_Router_for_use_with_3G_4G_USB_Modem.html

also note they are verified sellers with buyer protection plan. they got 99.62% positive ratings and the one guy who had negative ratings had a technician come buy his house who fixed the problem.

Read my review. if you got time. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ile-internet?p=5049473&viewfull=1#post5049473

Hi there,

I'm still having trouble connecting my PS3 and Xbox360 through my TP-link 3G wireless router. It comes up with a DNS error??

Any help would be hugely appreciated!!

look something like this . Obtain ip address ( router should issue you this)
Internet access (Success of Fail)
What results do you get ?

Having the same problem with my Netgear MBRN3000. Also cannot access playstation.com with my woosh stick via router or when its plugged into my pc. Methinks there is a Cell C network or DNS problem.

I have been having the same issues lately netgear router, give your PS3 static ip, then change the DNS to google 8.8.8.8 secondary 8.8.4.4 visa versa, or change the MTU 1492 from 1500 alternate between these. Also try to sign in via the store or some other way. Takes me about 15 min to get in sometime. Going to check on PS3 forum maybe they changed some ports.

Cell C to PSN network errors - possible network changes last week?

Hopefully there’s a Cell C rep on here who can assist with this since the call centre is, for all intents and purposes, useless.

Basically, I think Cell C must have made some kind of changes to their network 3 or 4 days ago, and this is affecting sign-on to the PSN (Playsation Network) on the PS3, and extends to the official PS sites (i.e. http://uk.playstation.com ) which can’t be accessed.

Before anyone starts saying it’s the Anonymous hacking group still targeting Sony, please read the following link to the PS3za forums, (http://www.ps3za.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=74291&page=3 ) and the pages following it.

In short, after finding out in drips and drabs that some people could connect to the PSN locally and others not, eventually it has been established that those who couldn’t connect all had one thing in common – they were all using Cell C.

As is also stated in the thread, the Cell C call centre simply refuses to think it’s anything to do with them, but I’d like the Cell C rep to perhaps investigate and confirm what the issue is.

Can someone, anyone from Cell C please have a look at this?

Thanks,
