More Sony PR BS to justify their stupid pricing ... Gates and and the guy from Nintendo must be rubbing their hands in glee at all of these pronouncements from Sony of late ... they are in a state of panic.

While the PS3 will run some oddball weirdo version of Linux I really see no chance of it being anything but a games console or DVD player.

i think until the PS3 is actually out in the street there will be so many variations of what it is, other than a console... :p

I am guessing that users will not even have root access to this wonderous Linux shell they'll be using.......

Bah, only the fanboys will still be blinded by this

I forsee the iPod merging with a cellphone...then the cellphone slowly evolving into a Laptop with a wireless internet connection with a microphone.

I guess that's sort of what I meant. It has already happened, and it hasn't happened yet. (Nokia n91, SE w950 just to name a two)

It's not about capability it's about need. I don't want to sit on the couch, with a keyboard on my lap, to type an email or a document. I don't want to have to wait 3 minutes to boot into windows to have a tetris quickie.

Here's another very interesting angle:

If you rewind to 1999 just before the launch of PS2. All this was said about the PS2. Now fast forward to this year and there hasn't been a console in history that has sold as much as the PS2.

Fanboism and over excitement takes over very quickly when it comes to Console releases.

Yoy'll see when the PSD3 outsells everything else (for whatever reason) those very same people will say, "ah but I knew it would its juist that..."
Sony might be going through some hard times of late, but what they do know very well is how to sel lthe Playstation brand.

The Playstation name is worth more than its price and technical specs, something both Nintendo and MS need to get right.
There are more average\joe general PS2 users out there than the hardcore gamers by far.
PS3 will share the same install base as the PS2 and that's alot of homes and software.
Sony knows how to market their Console. Their not selling the hardware, but the idea behind Playstation.

Techical superiority does not garuntee success. Naomi was superior to Emotion back in 1999 but see what happened to the DC? It was easy to wirte for mainly because it was powered by PowerVR's Graphics core which was similar if not an exact replica to what PVR had on the Desktop.

Did that make a differen? No!

Not saying PS3 is the best thing ever, just saying be careful before we say the PS3 is doomed. I for one hate having to eat my words. :/

PS 3 is also the s h i t est piece of computer hardware (going to be..) released. ever.

XBOX 360 is twice at fast so why even bother with it.

I'm still waiting for that SUPER COMPUTER PS2 that they said they will launch before it was released.

well, for starters we KNOW what the Xbox360 CAN do, we yet DONT know what the PS3 CAN do.

with all the wohha that Sony execs are doing they are hurting the PS3 in too many ways, pricing, game licencing, etc.

Why all the hating? I swear people get to excited when it comes to exciteing stuff :p

WAIT until it gets released. SEE what it can do and then COMPARE it to the other options available. We all know the Wii (har-har :D )has the lowest system specs, but it is shaping up to be a very good console. Give the PS3 its time.

Exactly. Why we so quick to judge?

The PS3 has all the fragment\vertex functions the XBOX360 has, so from a feature POV there really isn't much of a case.

Since it uses some form of Linux, I'm assuming native graphic API will be some form of GL or straight to hardware Cg+ compiler. In which case you as the developer can hand tweak your code to get great performance (doubt youll need too).

Look at it like this, NV2A powered the original XBox. This was a near identical NV20 GPU (GF3) but looked much better and had other nifty features that only han tweaking and a closed system can bring. Despite that it was limited to the features available on the DX8/8.1 API you could pull of some effects that would shame a lot of the *DX9* only games today.
Project Gotham/ Halo come to mind...

Now RSX just by itself has atleast 10X the abilities of the NV2A.
I for one don't see that as a bad thing. Sure it's not 48 pixel processors, but maybe it doesn't have to be.

I agree totally about letting the hardware / software do the talking. 360vsPS3 - tehre's no real functional difference, they're both based on high end "dx9'ish" parts, they'll look very similar.

My problem is with the smacktalk Sony's been dishing out, starting with "Next Gen doesn't start until we say it does" bull. I remember another company saying something about corporate computing. IBM. It's also worthy to note the company that dethroned them, and how long it took . . .

MS as been a bad boy for a long time and taken flak for it. I find they've wised up and are saying / doing all the things I as a consumer want to hear. Sony's just getting on my goat.

May the best product for the consumer win. So when can I preorder my Wii? ;)
