5 g's is still a lot for a console...

Look at what you get for the money. If you only want a cheap console just to play games then there is still the WII and the Xbox arcade. You cannot compare the technology but they still offer some good gaming value for the saving of about R1000.00+

If I were the OP I would wait a few months as there seems to be some developments coming soon. The future $/R exchange rate is a matter of concern though.

sony reported a loss of $1.1 billion, i dont know if thats good or bad

Their gaming division is doing fair. M$ SA admitted they were selling the Xbox at a loss. Thus therefore the sudden increase in Xbox prices.

/OT: I think all huge international companies will have the same problems giving the current economic downturn. That’s the penalty paid for creating false economies. /OT.

Xbox Arcade is half the price of the PS3. In South Africa the Wii is, due to the price, really only for truly casual gamers or non-gamers who specifically want the unique things it offers. The Xbox and PS3 are fairly comparable, although the new pricing puts things in the PS3's favour; if you're going to pay R5000 for a console you may as well get the one with the blu-ray drive even if you don't have any immediate use for it. If I were looking at an Elite I'd probably go PS3. If I were buying a console to do something weird like play games, then the cheaper versions of the Xbox make sense.

I think all these large corporations are ripping us off. Either way, they raking in huge profits.
