I dare anyone to suggest what one can do with a PS3 that one can't do just as well or better on a PC and that's important enough to justify the cost of the console and PS3 games.

You put your disc in and start playing. I play games on the PC too, but it never has and probably never will have the convenience of playing on a console. Good games are not about which has the best graphics or most processing power anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a PS3, but I don't want it enough to buy it. Sure, I think Tekken and Gran Turismo are two of the greatest games ever made, but I don't think that justifies the price. It's not long before a decent PS3 emulator for PC appears anyway. Also, I think the people claiming that gaming on PC will soon "die", are shortsighted.

I hear that HalfLife Episode 2 is only going to be released on PS3 and not PC? WTF is up with that? HL was born on PC!

The same is true of the PC. Is it worth spending thousands on a graphics card to play a game?

Wrong.

It happens. It wouldn't necessarily mean it will not come to the PC later. If I were in the game business I'd definitely consider releasing for consoles first.

Maybe one day PC gaming will die out. If it does it will be because there is a perceived lack of demand.

Well the prices of graphics cards are getting higher and higher. I mean R6000+ for a 8800GTX? Apart from that, if you want to get decent gameplay on your PC you'd have to upgrade your gfx card every 2 years or so. To me it's not worth blowing thousands every couple of years on one component alone, and still having to play your game all by yourself (apart from the odd LAN). With a PS3 or X360 for that matter you can invite your mates over and chill with a few beers. Anyway let's not start another console vs PC thread because it's getting kind of boring now :/

I had a PS2 which a seldom used. Gave it away. In the long run the games are too expensive and I was never comfortable with the Gamepad. And I don't want to buy something that can only do 1 or 2 things. I use my PC for much more than Games and Movies!

It'll be 2012 b4 you see a PS3 emulator. There still isn't a useful PS2 emulator today (that plays anything other than Guilty Gear) and the system is 7years old. This has nothing to do with the Power of the console (PS2 or PS3) but the architecture differences between closed and open box systems.

Don't know where you heard the HL-2 Episode2 rumor but it's false. And just like someone advised above, you should not listen to any and everybody about such things. There are 2 primary reasons why this wouldn't happen and they are related.
1. PS3 is powered by NVIDIA G7X based RSX GPU (Valve and ATi anyone?)
2. How would you distribute Episode2 on the Console when not everybody will have broadband connectivity esp considering that it's still a single player experience.
2a. Nobody shows of their engine abilities on a Console when they have the PC as an option :)
===========================
PC isn't more expensive than Console as such.
R6K gfx cards are only a situation that exists in SA where you get ripped off. That is not the case in the rest of the world. 8800GTX at BestBuy is R4,338 and GTS is R3,250.

The PC is not going to disappear as a gaming platform because for 1 development is done on the PC primarily and it is the cheapest medium to develop for in terms of development time, what makes it expensive is the accommodating of different system setups etc...
If the Console kills the PC as a gaming platform, instantly ATI/NVIDIA/MS DirectX division go out of business and that's not going to happen.

These next generation consoles can do nothing that a GF6 can't from 2004.

I'd actually say that, for gaming purposes, consoles can actually be more expensive if you consider the difference in the prices of console and PC games. PS2 prices have decreased significantly since its release, but when it was released, it was a bloody rip-off. I expect the same to happen with the PS3.

Yeah, serious Deja Vu.

Now if the PC boys would stop being so insecure and defensive and concede that there is place in the the world for both, we can get off this kick already.

best unbiased comparison i have come across. a lot of "rumours" are dispelled and debunked. great read... please read it to completion though

no excuses like "i can likes to be afrikaans, bru"

on topic though... truth be told, i WANT a ps3, a xbox360 AND pc... because they are all different and have their strong and week points. its all the same in the end, and which one is the strongest is of less importance. just gimme good games, irrelevant of the strenght of the console. i still love playing some of those old classic arcade games on mame... if the game is good, who gives a rats rear end about how technically advanced the platform is? :p

thats my 3.5 cents for the day :)
