Most probably for the same reason Samsung, LG and other OEM's do.. To real world beta test in case something comes up that they did not see in-house. ;)

Not something new or sinister for that matter. Hell we even do it in our manufacturing. We make small number of units and send them out... if there is comeback's/problems we address them before we do full production run. Replacing 100 units is waaaaay cheaper than 1 million.

Example: I have cut 200 items, that needs to go out to retail stores in Gauteng, last week. We going to manufacture and roll them out over the next month. Once they installed and we find no issues with installations, I will be cutting another 10 000 before December for nationwide roll out. Same material, same artwork, same design <--- that is in case nothing needs to change.

9 times out of 10 out pre-production run = production run, Only difference is size of the run. Pre I only use one laser cutter, on full production I run all 6 of them with the same job.

That's all great and well, but we are talking about reviews now of machines that are being produced in the hundreds of thousands now to enable them to be shipped across the world for delivery in a months time.

Or do you think the manufacturing runs are yet to start?

I think those review machines are what left over from their 1st run, that all the Microsoft Staff and top execs in other companies got way back when to test at home. If you recall Phil Spencer was caught to have one in plain site all this time giving feedback....

I highly doubt they did a small run of 20 or so units to give to Youtubers.

I can almost suspect a conversation going like this:
MS Staff: What must I do with the remainder of the stock that was not shipped.
MS Manager: Shend them back to ship with the rest of the sales...
MS Staff: But it has the word Promo on it, we cant.
MS Manager: Well then strip it for parts.
MS Staff (Trying to score one for his mate): What if we ship them to Influencers, then maybe they can review them.
MS Manager: But then they gonna reveal the units before launch.
MS Staff: Well we can slap them with embargo's and tell them when to release info.
MS Manager: Great idea, make it so

All these fantasies. Might make for a good indie game.

Anyway, it's just supposition (from all sides), and time will tell. Production units will be out in the next month or so, and then we will have fun attacking each others' console :)

The again, I guess that Evil Microsoft paid loads of $$ and made 20 "special" units with beefed up specs and what not just to sell extra unit or 2.

They not like that always do good company that installed rootkits or remove Advertised features on the consoles a year after launch.

Hey, why so sensitive if you don't believe me? And I'm not claiming that Sony is some angel disguised as an international corporation. And I can go dig up dirt on MS as well (and lot more of it, I imagine), but that would just be childish.

I just found it odd that what appeared to be a brand spanking new console (not that white blob in the background of Phil Spencers pic), being reviewed by DF, had some sort of "not for public consumption" message.

'Tis just my questioning nature :)

Happens all the time with high end electronics. Go watch early reviews of the newly released Sony A73S camera and you can see the pre-production models are marked in some other way. Nothing suspicious about it

I am starting to believe that talking to Splinter is like chatting to a "flat earthier" or "did we go to the moon" type...

Why you Xbox fanboi's always seem to want to play the person, and not the ball, seems to say volumes more about you than me :)

It merely states "Believe in something unproven and nothing will make em budge." <-- If you saw that as a play the person, you need a thicker skin or get off the internet..

PS: Im from the GNU generation....

Oh, I have a thick enough skin. I think you chaps need to follow this advice though :)

Although I have no idea what this generation is you refer to.

I'd wait until we've seen gameplay analysis on multiplatform next-generation games before all of us have a big nerdy dog pile...
