Not really the 2-door Peugeot I had in mind, but here goes

The French at PSA Group, the company that owns Citroen, DS, and the Peugeot brand, have stated this year that it will launch a 1-ton pickup truck.

At the time, the news went almost unnoticed in their press release, and we only mentioned it as a detail. However, a few months have passed since that point, and the French have yet to reveal anything. Because their plan was referring to a project that will take place over the course of five years, we did not expect them to show anything so early.

We cannot help wondering what will the French show us, so we decided to discuss all the sides of the story. As some of you know, Peugeot-Citroen has previously made utility vehicles with the Italians at Fiat.

Around the same time, the French corporation has partnered with two Japanese automakers for separate projects - Mitsubishi for electric vehicles and SUVs, and Toyota for city cars.

Currently, Fiat sells a pickup truck built on the same platform as the Mitsubishi L200, also known as the Mitsubishi Triton in some markets. The resulting Fiat is called Toro, and it is sold in Brazil.

Peugeot offered a ute on the Brazilian market, which was named Peugeot Hoggar. It looked like its front was based on the 207, and the interior also borrowed some cues from the French supermini, while the rear had a pickup bed and all the associated shapes and elements.

Another possibility involves a direct partnership with Mitsubishi, because they were the ones that supplied the platform of the L200 to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in the first place.

Peugeot and Citroen both sold rebadged and mildly restyled Mitsubishi models, in the form of the Peugeot iOn and the Citroen C-Zero, which were French versions of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Their Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser models were also based on a Mitsubishi, which was the Outlander.

Another possibility involves borrowing the Hilux platform from their existing partners at Toyota. The Hilux is a capable and respected model in the world of pickup trucks, and Peugeot and Citroen could not say no to this vehicle if it were available for them.

Anyone else imagine Oprah pointing at car executives and shouting "You build a bakkie, you build a bakkie. Everybody build a bakkie!"?

Also, that article needs to get it's fact straight. The Toro is built on a Fiat/GM platform. The Mitsubishi/Fiat bakkie is the Fullback.

Groupe PSA will start building a Peugeot-badged bakkie in a new factory in Tunisia in mid-2018, the French automaker said in a statement.

PSA said that it had signed a “letter of intent” with Stafim, its long-term partner in the African country, to “assemble and sell a Peugeot brand pick-up truck in Tunisia”.

The planned assembly plant is scheduled to start operations in mid-2018, with the intention of producing 1 200 units annually.

Back in April, the French automaker revealed plans to add a one-ton pick-up to its range, sparking speculation that it would extend its platform-sharing agreement with Toyota to include the Hilux. This, of course, has since neither been confirmed nor denied.

According to Automotive News Europe, PSA will also open a factory in Morocco in 2019, with the intention to build Peugeot and Citroën sedans. The brand is furthermore reportedly investigating production possibilities in Algeria, as well as eyeing a return to building cars in Iran.

If they could make a 1 tonner as sexy as the 407... it would be the most sexy & versatile coupe ever.
