Lol. Probably not for another 5 years at least. If we lucky Sony *may* bring a new, slightly improved version of PSP like Nintendo did with the DS (Lite).

There was a survey a couple of months ago sent out to PSP owners that registered on one of the official PSP sites (the US one I think) so ot certainly seems they are collecting info and heading that way. If I'm not mistaken Sony have indicated they intend the PS3 to have a much longer lifespan than the PS2, so perhaps they will be diverting additional R&D to the portable market?
On the other hand, they have poured insane amounts of money into PS3 R&D and will be losing even bigger amounts on initial hardware sales, and the PSP has not sold quite as well as they had projected, so it's quite possible (and likely) that they will hold back on new devices for a while to allow the PlayStation division to start generating profit again.

They've kind of earned the right to be cocky don't you think? In a matter of two generations they have taken gaming from being a niche market to being 'cool' amongst a mainstream audience (older than 15), and they have sold an insane number of consoles.

Not as much as you may think. Maybe in ZA because there was no mass market console before the Playstation, but Nintendo gave out some really interesting stats about a year ago, when they announced the Wii (nee Revolution).

Although there's been a lot of games consoles sold the size of the gaming market has not actually increased significantly for around 10 years. (~80 million gamers I believe) It has also polarized as a male dominated activity in those past 10 years, which is why Ninty changed direction in such a big way, it wasn't just to hype 'their' approached, they had the numbers to back it up.

Sony needs to remember, that
a.) When you're on top, the only place to go is down,
b.) People like to back the underdog.

Not when its my money, in sport yes, but id rather spend my money on something i know is better than buy from the underdog to support it but their product is cr@p
