Public Health Care Employees Are Suffering

My wife is currently doing her community service at Pelenomi Public Hospital In Bloemfontein.

She too suffers from Bipolar mood disorder and we used to live in beautiful East-London.

The Department of Health was requested by two doctors not to place her at Pelonomi in Bloemfontein but to allow her to complete her community service in East London, where she would be near her doctors and family. As a result of poor inter-province communication and total disregard for the medical professionals’ opinions and requests, my wife had to leave East London at the last minute to commence duty at Pelonomi Hospital.

I myself had to resign from a fantastic job in east-london and find new employment in Bloemfontein (which I am currently hating)!

We incurred major financial expenses and my wife suffered emotional stress in relocating to Bloemfontein and the fears of her doctors that had requested she remain in East London were realized. My wife suffered a bipolar relapse and has subsequently been an out-patient at Oranje psychiatric Hospital and is receiving ongoing treatment due to the relapse caused by the stress of the relocation and the problems experienced at Pelonomi Hospital.

She is also pregnant and even after numerous letters from her doctor and from the doctors at Oranje Hospital, her working hours were not reduced to eight hours a day. My wife often works over nine hours a day, which causes unnecessary stress on her emotional well being and on her pregnancy.

As a direct result of the above mentioned causes of her relapse, my wife was booked off for a whole working week by the doctors at Oranje hospital in order to stabilize her and avoid her from being admitted to Oranje hospital for a prolonged period of time.
The leave that she was forced to take as a result of her relapse that was brought on by the aforementioned causes and has resulted in her using up five days more than her allotted sick leave.
Now the State wants to deduct a weeks pay from her salary!!!

Over and above this:

In accordance with the National Health Department’s relocation of medical health professionals regulations and procedures, there are certain costs that are to be awarded to the employee upon relocation and resettlement.
As directed by the National Health Department’s policies, a community service placement is entitled to all relocation costs being paid as well as the imbursement of a “Sundry Bonus”.

Since the 1st of September, 2008 all forms and requirements for the above said policies, were submitted no less than three times by my wife. It was ascertained that she, as a community service placement, is entitled to a sundry payment as well as the traveling costs incurred during her relocation from the Eastern Cape to the Free State. This has not happened.

All necessary documentation was submitted and approved at head office level. The documentation was then returned to Pelonomi Hospital for processing and payment. This, however, has not happened and on three occasions after the sundry and travel costs had been approved at head office level, Pelonomi Hospital has refused to pay, constantly giving different reasons for non-payment. The latest excuse is that "they have no money".

I am seriously concerned for my wife's health and that of my unborn child, I am at a loss and am tired of swimming upstream.

Summary:

It has been a constant battle for months now and has become a major grievance. After being placed at Pelonomi by the state and after incurring major costs and losses due to the relocation, I feel that it is only fair that the owed moneys are paid. All moneys owed are in accordance with the National Health Department’s policies regarding transfers and community service placements.

The hospital and the Department of health just ignore the special circumstances and the conditions my wife suffer from (Bipolar Mood Disorder coupled with a pregnancy). It would prove to be prudent that Pelonomi Hospital be sensitive to the special needs required by my wife as a result of the two medical conditions listed above, yet they simply ignore the situation and continue to give us the run-around.

My appologies for this post but I really just needed to vent...Working for the state SUX!!!
No wonder they have no staff in the public hospitals.

I meant him and his wife ;)

That must get quite ... fun at times.

I know what you mean, that's why I said there's a good chance the kid will also be diagnosed with it one day ;) I have a friend who's mom and dad also have bipolar, and they actually get along very well. Everyone is affected differently by it, some very mildly, so much so that you'd have never said that person is bipolar.

Since it's genetic, there's a fairly good chance that the child will also be diagnosed with it during teenage years.

Yup both Bipolar and we are well aware of the chance that our daughter might end up with Bipolar. I have ADHD aswell so things get quite interesting at times but all is under control...in spite of the State Hospitals!
