Ndengetho High School pupils in KwaZulu-Natal allegedly set fire to several classrooms after police confiscated about 400 phones during a spot search on Thursday.

Provincial education department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said police were called in to search the children for drugs and weapons, when they also found cellphones, which are also prohibited at the school, west of Durban.

The pupils were told the police would keep the cellphones at the police station, as they would not fit in the school’s safe and it was unsafe to keep so many phones on school premises.

If your school is a sht!hole, you won't feel too bad about burning it down.

Also, nobody touches my phone, and they apparently took 400. The government gangsters created this situation.
Well it all depends on why the phones were confiscated really... If its a flimsy bollocks reason then the SAPS are responsible for this ultimately.

But that whole area is a cesspool of violence so its not surprising that they burned the school down.

It sounds like a crap place overall, i wouldn't be surprised if the school is like a mini prison.

Can't blame people for acting out in frustration towards useless and incompetent police.

Just the township mentality of burning your own things is questionable.

While I do understand that rules are rules, I don't believe the school has any right to "confiscate" any item that is not illegal.
My kids high school apparently has this rule that the kids are allowed to bring their phones to school, but not use them and if they are caught using it, it gets confiscated and you have to pay R200 to get it back... Now, my kids are almost done with school and never had their phones confiscated because they were brought up to respect the rules, but it will sure get interesting if the school ever tries to pull that stunt with me...
If it were to ever happen, my first stop would be the SAPS to open a case of theft. Then I will make an appointment with the principal to either give back my kids phone and publicly apologize for their criminal actions or be prepared for a very public legal battle, both criminal and civil...
If my kids break the rules, punish them or inform me and I will punish them (I do believe discipline is my responsibility and not the school's), but dont rob them of their belongings and hold it to ransom...

Charging a child R200 to get their cellphone back? I don't believe it

I'm glad you've got funds for that. Most people can barely keep their car running.

My school always used to take our tapes, walkmans, records, posters, denim jackets, badges...
(If you were daft enough to be caught during school time with it...)
In other words, whatever you brought, that you shouldnt have other than your required books etc...

And we had to pay a fine to get the stuff back at the end of term or clean desks or some form of punishment...
That's back in the crazy 80s..When child abuse and corporal punishment was at its best!
How many schools did we burn down?
None...

People find too many excuses for other people wrecking the place...You cant keep destroying everything because you are miff about something..Unfortunately now the handful that wanted to better themselves, can't....
But it is what it is and it aint gonna change...
