Putin reminds Ramaphosa of nuclear deal

Former President Jacob Zuma and Vladimir Putin enjoyed close relations and it was under his watch that South Africa entered into a nuclear deal with Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has brought up the nuclear deal in his first meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the BRICS summit on Thursday afternoon.

Officials say he was "frank" in reminding South Africa that an intergovernmental agreement has been signed between the two countries on nuclear.

But Ramaphosa responded by saying South Africa is committed to an energy mix.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko says the nuclear deal was discussed at the bilateral meeting held between Putin and Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

“There was a discussion around how South Africa can assist Russia in terms of its nuclear capacity.”

Diko says Ramaphosa noted that South Africa’s difficult economic situation means the nuclear deal can’t go forward.

“Our economy is very stagnant, it’s not growing at the rate that we want it to, so while we remain committed to an energy mix, which includes nuclear, South Africa is not yet at a point where it's able to sign on the dotted line.”

Former President Jacob Zuma and Putin enjoyed close relations and it was under his watch that South Africa entered into a nuclear deal with Russia.

Diko would not comment on the relations between Ramaphosa and the Russian strongman, only saying relations between the two countries are solid.

No more nuclear for South Africa, says ANC treasurer-general
Paul Mashatile, the African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general, has revealed that South Africa’s nuclear power expansion program has been halted due to its unaffordability.

ANC slams claims SA can't afford nuclear power
Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe says claims SA can’t afford nuclear power are 'mischievous'.

Did Zuma cross Putin?
Despite the expected denials, we cannot simply discard the Sunday Times report that Russia's Vladimir Putin sent a delegation to Zuma a day or so before the Cabinet reshuffle to demand that the R800 billion plus agreement Zuma's emissaries had signed with state nuclear giant Rosatom now be implemented.

It is also no surprise that Putin demanded that Mahlobo, his point man in South Africa, be appointed to oversee the process leading up to the building of several nuclear power stations. Mahlobo has become very at home in the Kremlin.

Zuma ‘didn’t sign deal with Russia’
It said the agreement laid the foundation for South Africa’s nuclear procurement and development programme “based on the construction in the RSA of new nuclear power plants with Russian VVER reactors with total installed capacity of up to 9.6GW”. Russian media reported the deal was in the bag.

‘Gigaba has signed nuclear deal, we are Russia’s slaves’
“Mission Nuclear done and dusted. Guess whose company is in charge of building the nuclear plants?

“Khulubuse Zuma is the SA holding company for the Nuclear plants. The next 20 yrs Khulubuse Zuma will be making more than 50billion. Congratulations, mission accomplished.”

So what and who should we believe?

Really?
South Africa can assist Russia!

Same thing comrade Mother Russia has just updated. Its still the USSR to me

Exactly the same thinking in Moscow as well as the knowledge that the local puppets will still dance to the same tune.

A pity that Putin does not send Zuma the Novichok present.

Nothing would make me happier than a good dose of polonium poising for that cnut.

I am not so blood thirsty. Instead, I am sure it will be one of the most enjoyable experience to see him in orange overalls and shackles for majority Seffricans.
