Australian airline Qantas has grounded one of its Boeing 737 NG planes after discovering "cracking" in one section.

The carrier said several airlines were inspecting their 737 NG fleets after Boeing revealed an area near the wing may be prone to cracking.

News agency AFP reported up to 50 planes globally had been grounded due to the issue.

Qantas said: "Even when a crack is present, it does not immediately compromise the safety of the aircraft.

"We would never operate an aircraft unless it was completely safe to do so."

So first the Boeing 737-Max and now the 737-NG are having issues. Both are Boeing's top sellers. I wonder how the company will handle this. Probably blame the pilots for pushing the airframe too hard. Just like they blamed the pilots' lack of training for the 737-Max accidents.

Like I said before, nothing better than a car and some quality family or me-time.

Statistically, flying is safer than driving. Just yesterday alone, I had 3 near-hits. The closest was a taxi skipping a stop sign and almost t-boning me. Others were people skipping red lights.

And you're not going to drive to New Zealand...

You are still here this morning, right?

So does millions of frequent flyers. In SA alone, when last did you hear of a major airliner accident with fatalities locally?

And he's not going to drive to Panama either. :p

(EDIT: Suppose he can always sail over, Greta Thunberg style.)

May the 5th this year to be exact, Aeroflot in Moscow. Of course the controversy that got Boeing most of its publicity was following the Ethiopian Airlines crash on March 10 this year.

Those are pretty recent, in fact 2019 has been quite deadly for airline passengers:

Not that I disagree with you on statistical odds etc, just a bit weird to ask "when last" when in fact the last incidents were pretty recent.

I meant to write "locally" at the end but got distracted.

There is a long-standing thread in the Transportation sub-forum about crack inspections and groundings of B737 NG aircraft. The Qantas one is only the latest in a series of such findings. Please do some background reading:

P.S. Anything posted in the News forum seems to attract the usual crackpots and uninformed comments.

Apologies. I failed to do a search before creating this thread. Yes, I remember the thread. I think it was created after the 2nd MAX accident.

It also turns every discussion into a seven sided argument that doesn't make any sense
