Perhaps because most of them grew up having to hide who there were from loved ones/peers for fear of being judged? I imagine if I had grown up with a secret for most of my life and finally told the world about it, I too might decide to wave a flag on main street.

Maybe the day every country in the world makes it legal to be gay, and when children don't fear the repercussions of "coming out" to their parents, or the judgement of their religion, maybe then will be the day rainbow flags won't be needed anymore.
