Hi All,

I am new to this internet/wifi setup, I just recently had a 40 gig capped 4MBPS line and have upgraded to a 4MBPS uncapped line all through Telkom.

My questions are,

1) where can I now see my usage to know how much data I have used during the day.

2) where can I go that is a reputable site to test my line speed.

3) At what amount will Telkom start throttling me eg 200 gigs.

4) Can someone explain in simple terms what a ping is.

5) when I logged onto Telkoms usage site I saw a light blue bar with on the one end saying Normal and the other end of the bar saying Power and my bar was a quarter lit dark blue.Any Idea what that is.

Sorry for all the questions, still a newbie at all this

Thanks

Thanks

1. http://adsl.telkomsa.net/ >>>> Customer Portal
2. speedtest.net
3. " Shaping at FUP 1 " starts at 180Gb (speed can be slow at times because Telkom is shyt)
4. Ping is the reaction time of your connection–how fast you get a response after you've sent out a request. (Fast ping better gaming)
5. It means you're within your FUP and shaping does not apply. Customer portal is a better option, more advanced and better interface.

1.) AFIAK you can't. At least I could never find it as an uncapped customer.
5.) Blue is good, when you hit red and get into Power user status you get throttled to very very slow speeds.

Test your line with Zertop's Line tool and report the results either on that thread or here.

Go into the admin webpage for your router and get hold of the line stats. Use this as a base line for future evaluation of your service to see if it is delivering what you are paying for and that it maintains that performance over time.

Get yourself some third party sw installed that will allow you to monitor data usage (similar to what is done on mobile devices). I don't bother anymore and am a bit out of date with what is available for fixed lines and PCs. Maybe someone else will be able to help with some suggestions?

A word of warning. The path you are on (that of continually being paranoid about what your line and service is doing) is habit forming and all-time consuming!) Very bad for your on going mental health!
