Uber's secret airport fees in South Africa

Uber is loading its fares to and from South Africa's airports with surcharges, adding up to R30 to the price quoted when requesting a trip.

A MyBroadband reader informed us of the issue after they were charged an "airport surcharge" and a "Lanseria Airport surcharge" for their trip from the terminal to Douglasdale.

Yes, had a number of airport trips the last few weeks and saw these added after the fact.

Not happy about it, but I doubt Uber cares whether I am or not.

Most of the Uber vehicles over the last month were also in a rather sorry state, Uber is becoming less viable to use, for me anyway.

It's not a secret. They're more expensive than the shuttle if you're going as far as Stellies. Suits us just fine.

Cape Town Group are super professional, friendly and easy to book. Highly recommended if you ever need a shuttle in CT.

It’s been like this for as long as I can remember? They always added a surcharge. Or is the issue that it doubled up?

This is bull and Lanseria is a private airport, not Government owned so how can they levy a extra charge...

This might be contravening the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act.

Section 43
(1) A supplier offering goods or services for sale, for hire or for exchange by way of an electronic transaction must make the following information available to consumers on the web site where such goods or services are offered:
(i) the full price of the goods or services, including transport costs, taxes and any other fees or costs
Think the Consumer Ombuds need to look into this.

R700 for me to go to the airport, to be fair I had no idea that uber was available in my area. haven't tried it yet but I imagine the wait times for pickup must be high. -

Uber is a concept that should be outlawed in South Africa. How can an organisation that effectively is anonymous, doesn't employ anybody, charged rates randomly and provides a service that is a danger to its clients be allowed to operate without control, throw them out of South Africa.

Sounds like our taxis... Uber fits right in then.

I had this nice exchange with them:

This is the 3rd time where the final charge was almost double than the initial quoted amount.
