Questions regarding Telkom's R599 special

Right now I have my line rental, 4Mbps, through Telkom, and Webafrica is my service provider. Because I have 3 daughters whom all discover the wonders of Youtube, my Usage rating is now permanently on 1 star (with Webafrica).

Total amount paid per months : R530 to Telkom, R249 to Webafrica. Total is about R780 per month, give or take.

Now, Telkom is running a R599 special. It includes:
- 4Mbps DSL line
- land line rental
- Telkom Unlimited Uncapped Internet
- free Telkom to Telkom calls
- TI Mobile data (1GB)

Considering I already have a 4Mbps line, I assume I do not qualify for the LIT_ box, so my question is this: Would streaming of Youtube, via any other device in my house (connected to my DSL), still be zero-rated usage of data, if I am on this package from Telkom?

Or is it only zero rated if you stream through the LIT_ device?

Do you have a contract? I think if you switch to a contract you can get the LIT box

Hi Trent242, Zero rated means zero rated. Whether you stream YouTube through any TV box or PC or laptop or tablet or smart phone matters not, you pay zero. Nothing. Zilch. YouTube streaming is free, gratis, without charge, at no cost, complimentary, on the house.

Firstly that's not a special.
Secondly you can get a 10mb line from Mweb for R760
Vox for R700
Afrihost R660

Or 20mb line from

Afrihost for R780

Edit: I forgot about the landline.

YouTube streaming is only zero rated if you have one of the qualifying Lit products. The 4meg home uncapped is unfortunately not one of them.

Hi Sumen, you forget to add the R199 landline rental. MWEB is R958 for 10Mbps uncapped (R759 + R199).

Telkom runs circles around MWEB and Vox and Afrihost. Here is my summary for MWEB. I’m busy double checking on Vox and Afrihost too. I already know Telkom beats them by miles.

Yes I did, It clearly shows how Telkom's compulsory Landline is holding everyone back from getting a faster ADSL line

It's not holding back Telkom Internet subscribers.

Is the LIT zero rated to begin with?

Hi bwana. YouTube is zero rated, meaning you can watch as much YouTube as you want, at no extra cost, both YouTube and the Telkom data is free. You can also stream say Multichoice DStv, the data is free, but you pay DStv.

Interesting, thanks.

The feeling I get from this is that it's only content, including Netflix, that is streamed via the LIT box that is zero-rated?

The companies used a video compression adaption in order to reduce quality of content from services like DStv Now, Showmax and Netflix - all of which stream free, but require their own subscription.

The video is compressed to the standard definition (360P), which cannot match high-definition when watching on an HD TV, but is hardly noticeable that it is not HD while viewing on a smartphone or smaller screen.

OK, so I took the plunge and signed up for it.

4Mbps at R599 pm x24

NO extra rental fees to be paid. The R599 includes everything, except of course calls to non-qualifying numbers. Calls to Telkom network are free (land and mobile).

Even though I have the 4Mbps DSL line already, I qualified for the LIT_ box when I signed up for the 24 months contract. Youtube streaming will be zero rated when done through the box. Any other device does not qualify for free Youtube.

Also get a free router LOL.

13 - 14 days for order completion and device delivery.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I hope you are right. But the call centre agent indicated only streaming from qualifying sources (Netflix, Youtube, SHowmax, DSTV) through the LIT_ box, qualifies.
