You could use a PC if you wanted the likes of PVR capabilities, but just as a media centre you don't need a separate device. We don't hate the PS3, we just hate marketing campaigns that exploit the uninformed.

PS: read a few posts earlier, you still won't be able to gain access to the hardware with linux, therefore it's useless other than for the purpose of running games.

geeez, im being attacked from all directions. linux just makes it more versatile i think. there are millions of linux applications you could load on it. why do you hate the ps3 so much?

lol, i don't hate the PS3 so much, i just really don't see any good reason to install linux on it... :D

hehe. like i said, i like the versatility. and personally prefer the sony name rather than m$ :p

LOL you're one of the minority on this forum that prefers the Sony name - you obviously haven't heard much about their DRM and rootkit issues. And that's saying a lot considering how loved MS is.

The price will be argued about forever, but I still think Consoles should be bought the same way printers are these days...

Sure the quality needs to be taken into account, but you dont buy printers according to their price anymore, you buy them according to how expensive their ink is. You won't buy a snazzy printer that has ink costing so much you so much that you have to take out a new bond just to buy more ink, same goes for consoles and the prices of their games...

if sony wants to be taken seriously, they'll drop the gaming prices to that of the 360 or below... people will still buy the consoles at current prices then. It's a bit of a no brainer.

not that i have anything against it, but why do the okes try and load a linux kernel on anything with 2 electrons on it ? I expect the answer to be similar to the reason why a dog licks its own balls... "because we can!"

Here we go again, another PS3 article about pricing turns into a console war with none other than Gavin leading the way... Well done !! You managed to hi-jack another thread.
Talking about advertising, how funny was it when I mentioned the ODF vs OOXML issue and a day later we have a banner on the myadsl website from M$ promoting their ****ty format. Let's talk about that ....

PS3 is not more powerful and the linux installation does not have full access to the hardware which means it is pretty useless anyway.

I have a PC ;)

Please explain 'useless' - seems you equate anything linux or opensource as useless. If I can install another OS onto a gaming platform, use a keyboard, sit in the lounge and surf the net, play mp3 or ogg or watch divx then it's good enough for me.

Don't take it personally, there's lots of Redmond fans here and the usual blabber from them is FUD.

Dude, in all fairness Gavin made a valid point about the price point and entry to HD gaming. I don't see how you can really have a discussion around the PS3s price without mentioning the XBox? Surely you have to compare it to what else is on the market at what price in order to determine it's value for money? Now I understand why Sony would want to ban the mention of the XBox when discussing the PS3, but isn't it that attitude that has got them into so much trouble in the frst place?

In fact, this thread was going along quite pleasantly until NoADSLyet waded in with his "nappy army" comment and then of course yourself starting with personal attacks. And when, inevitably, you get flames by the forum members, no doubt you will complain of an XBox bias, when in fact it is you guys who once again picked a fight for no reason.

Yes, but my point is that Gavin is alway there reminding people of pricing and the choice of games, and I will stand by my conviction of not supporting the biggest convicted monopoly. So you can go ahead and trumpet the merits of the XBOX and I push for the alternatives, anything to keep my money getting into M$ hands.

Fair enough. But pricing and the choice of games is the reason the PS3 is perhaps not doing nearly as well as was expected of it. These are very relevant and real issues. Bear in mind that gavin is as passionate about his XBox as abev about his PS3, but no need to kill each other over it**.Thats a good thing. I want both, but I won't put Linux on my PS3 ;)

As to which company is more evil? They both suck as far as I'm concerned, but MS at least gives us better support in SA than Sony does (not perfect though - where is my Live support??).

** Be awesome if we could kill each other over it. Say on CoD4. But alas, I think there is no way in hell we will ever be able to cross platform multiplay anything. Would be amazing though.

Yours are still a better spec it seems, backward compatible and a few things more. Do not know if it is worth it but there is many ps2 titles that is worth having.
