I'll soon be off the fence, getting my 60GB PS3 start pack as soon as they get the R5599 price tag. I'll be playing games and dreaming of the day I can put a Bose sound system next to my PS3 (same design school?). Will you lot still be here fight over which one is better?

In football I'll support anyone playing ManU (even Banana Banana); in electronics/IT I'll support anyone playing against TinyFlaccid. It's bad enough that I have no choice when it comes to my custom built PC (having to run Wind00s to play my games); I'm certainly not going to allow that company into my lounge as well.

So I have my reasons for being pro PS3 and I'm sure you have yours for being pro Xbox. Whatever the reasons, go play and enjoy!

Here we go again, another PS3 article about pricing turns into a console war with none other than Gavin leading the way... Well done !! You managed to hi-jack another thread.

Hey what can I say I am a natural born leader ;)

Please explain 'useless' - seems you equate anything linux or opensource as useless. If I can install another OS onto a gaming platform, use a keyboard, sit in the lounge and surf the net, play mp3 or ogg or watch divx then it's good enough for me.

I used the term useless in conjunction with what should be possible with a linux installation. Since the hardware level is protected the linux installation is very limited. Maybe useless is to strong a word, how about un-feature rich....

Yes, but my point is that Gavin is alway there reminding people of pricing and the choice of games,

So it's a bad thing that I mention pricing and choice of games
My main complaint with this 'article' is that it isn't an article it's an advert.

Fair enough. But pricing and the choice of games is the reason the PS3 is perhaps not doing nearly as well as was expected of it. These are very relevant and real issues. Bear in mind that gavin is as passionate about his XBox as abev about his PS3, but no need to kill each other over it**.Thats a good thing. I want both, but I won't put Linux on my PS3 ;)

I am actually passionate about all the consoles, I just feel at this current moment in time the Xbox 360 offers better value for money than any other console. This may change when the AAA titles are released for the PS3 and the controllers are rumbling.

I have to say I find it odd that someone would complain about a console being compared against another based on choice of games and cost.

You could use a PC if you wanted the likes of PVR capabilities, but just as a media centre you don't need a separate device.
You do because the Xbox still won't play DivX. The DVD player is region locked and for some reason it won't do DVD upscaling via component.

It always astounds me how people buy things based on their opinions about every aspect surrounding the product except that which they actually buy the product for in the first place.

When you buy a console you want to play games and maybe do the media centre thing. Where exactly does the M$ or sony brand come into play in that equation? If you buy a calculator, do you also buy a specific brand, or do you buy the one that suites your needs and gives the best value for money?

So what if M$ is made up of a bunch of unethical tits? They're selling a console which (at this point in time) is way better value for money than Sony's(which BTW is a bunch of unethical f#cks as well) console.

It has already been well established that neither console is that much better than the other, so logically it doesn't make sense to pick one based on anything else than price, game price and the number of games available. At this point in time, that would be the xbox, although that may very well change, at which point the only deciding factor will be personal preference.

One last thought... If sony is so much better and nicer than M$, then why exactly do they not give a **** about they're customers and what THEY want...? Atleast M$ actually listened to what people wanted in a console, whereas sony went ahead and threw everything except what people actually wanted in there?

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Sony's arrogance got the better of them in this round, let's just hope they learn from it...

hehe. like i said, i like the versatility. and personally prefer the sony name rather than m$ :p
I probably despise them both equally.

I don't know what media features or hardware access you'll get installing Linux. There was enough on the PS2, although if Sony are making a loss on each PS3 they don't want to be touting its' linux abilities because those will appeal to a group that won't buy any games, rather buying it for it's raw processing capabilities.

That's strange, then my Xbox must be broken because it plays DivX/Xvid and just about everything else just fine through a proper MCE setup...

geeez, im being attacked from all directions. linux just makes it more versatile i think. there are millions of linux applications you could load on it. why do you hate the ps3 so much?

Its because the majority posting the attacks at you own an XBox 360. They dont want to think that anything could come even close to being better than their pride and joy :p

I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the 360 upscaled to 720p through component and then to 1080p through the VGA cable?

I am also under the impression that you cannot tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on anything under 50"......

I could be wrong on the second one though.

So you can go ahead and trumpet the merits of the XBOX and I push for the alternatives, anything to keep my money getting into M$ hands.
You can always buy the console and copy the games :)

Best time to do that is when the console is still costing the company money.

Put the disc in the Xbox and tell me if it will play the files.

Everywhere I've looked it has said that 720p upscaling is only done via VGA. There's no reason they shouldn't do both 720p and 1080p over component though.

It's only of technical interest until there is a way to rip the region check out. Only a tiny fraction of my DVD collection is region 2. Movies studios/Microsoft must be trying to tell me I should rather have bought region 0 counterfeits.

It is doubtful the PS3 is good enough to justify its price. Someone in the market for a blu-ray player might be inclined to buy a PS3 as a cheaper alternative with game console capabilities.
