With only max EDGE on the BBs downloading even big emails is going to be a real pain. Also there is no EDGE coverage here so using only GPRS is going to be much worse.
As for using the bbery as your primary or only internet connection I wouldnt suggest it but email happens in the background so even if it takes a while it's hardly painful. :)

Odd thing is it is only during power failures that I seem to have EDGE. The rest of the time it's gprs.
Can it do ssl? Internet banking?
Can it post here?
Post here - definitely, internet banking - seems so, SSL - dunno

No VC EDGE here anyway so that's not a problem:) Also the BB being able to do internet banking is one up on Opera Mini.

Can it really do Internet banking Bwana? You said you're not sure about ssl... without which Internet banking is impossible or dicey... or am I wrong?

Some bank sites seem to work better than others but that's just design. I haven't figured out how to view the certificate yet so that could be a sticking point for some.

Has anyone else had trouble getting this service? I got a Blackberry 7290 on a top-up package a few months ago -- didn't know and wasn't told that I couldn't go online without the Blackberry service. I should have done more research before, so I let it drop, and just used it as a phone/organiser.

Finally they introduce the R69 offer, which states all you need is a Vodacom contract, which I do. But apparently I don't qualify because the offer excludes "top-up" packages! I asked the clueless person at Nashua Mobile to stipulate the reasons in writing so I can take it up with someone but still no response from him. Been 4 days so far.

I would like to take this up with the ASA. Please let me know if anyone else is having hassles with this.

Slightly o/t but I have/had the 7290 and it makes a lousy phone (imo) - maybe you want to do yourself a favour and get a 4U contract just for the blackberry and use your top-up package on a different phone?

Considering they allow blackberry add-on for the 4U it really surprises me that they wont for any and all contracts - perhaps vodacom3g can shed some light?

Top up is supposed to be a best of both (i.e. Contract and pre-paid) but in some cases (like here) it comes off looking like an adopted child.

AFAIK the reason for your problem is that topup contracts are set up as prepaid on Vodacom's internal systems. Not that it helps you much though, you could always upgrade to Weekender?

kinda silly of them. If you can add on to any contract package including the 4U then they should make a plan.

They should but that was the same problem they had with data bundles etc. before they launched the prepaid version. Easier said than done I suppose.
