When I logged into the 8ta/Telkom Mobile portal, I saw that the 8ta/Telkom Mobile name has now been removed and it's just Telkom.

Can't help but wonder how much money has been wasted from 8ta > Telkom Mobile > back to the original name.

I loved the 8ta name, cos that it where it all started, then a bit miffed when it changed to Telkom Mobile and now unspecial when it changed back to the original name.

Oh well, just wanted to get it off my chest. :(

And I though you are leaving the people you sang so much praise to.

I also liked the 8ta name but it didn't suit the business target market they wanted so they went with Telkom Mobile which is not that bad, but I just hate having it as Telkom.

When still in the conception stage there was a huge debate as to whether the mobile division should be a separate legal enity and a wholly owned subsidiary or a separate division within Telkom (which won and 8ta was born) or whether it should be integrated with Telkom's Retail division (as it is now).

All three had its pros and cons and I was in favour of the latter. The 8ta option created too much duplication and plenty of money was invested into making it totally separate from the "old" Telkom.

However there were moves afoot (in 2009 already) to totally transform Telkom, part of which entailed a wireless presence in the rural and non-ADSL areas to facilitate the recovery of/disinvest in the copper network due to it being unprofitable and prone to theft (high maintenance).

It also created ill-feeling within the company as the 8ta staff were seen to be elitist and not part of the Telkom Group. As an example, 8ta had to apply for transmission links in the same way as the other mobile operators by placing orders on Telkom Wholesale.

This iteration bring the 8ta network and staff back into Telkom Wholesale, while the sales staff move to Telkom Retail. The outstanding puzzle piece is the transfer of the radio access network to MTN....

The biggest benefit is the consolidated planning of the fixed and mobile networks as well as the fixed/mobile combo products that Telkom Retail can now offer.

Hehe. At least we can rejoice that people are different.

Call me too fuddy-duddy, but I really don't like the 8ta name. It's quite off-putting for me. My company has a Telkom Mobile Business contract, but my SIM is 8ta, and it irks me. When I switched to TM they didn't have any TM nanoSIMs, so I had to get this hip-hip 8ta thingie. Will get it changed one day... :D

I'm glad they finally woke up.

My main reason for moving. I want (and have) one account for fixed and mobile. Just wish they would get the business circle set up.

What’s up with the title, you almost made me say something appalling?

Hopefully the name change and reintegration into Telkom Retail will not affect the quality of service or the product options.

There are already changes, if I recall correctly there was a post today that said the night surfer times have changed.

I can only assume that it was done to be in line with the rest of Telkom Internet.

New boss, rebranding into one well known name, not the worst strategy. They are cross selling all the products now, if they land netflix they can do an awesome triple play.

Also new logo.

I've been with 8ta, then Telkom Mobile, and back to Telkom, all in the space of three years.

Just feeling a bit nostalgic tonight. :)

Where did you hear that?
Telkom Mobile brand have merged with Telkom, they didn't say they are going to change their network infrastructure.

Read MickeyD's post

The outstanding puzzle piece is the transfer of the radio access network to MTN....

Was it confirmed that they will take that route? I think it will be foolish to transfer your existing infrastructure just to rent it from someone else.
Will they not sub-contract the areas where they do not have coverage?
