R499 for 20Mbps from prominent ISP is misleading – ARB

The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has ruled that Level 7 Wireless’ claim of offering “20Mbps unlimited Internet starting from R499” is misleading.

Level 7 Wireless was advertising its broadband products through Instagram with the wording “Kry 20Mbps Onbeperkte Internet. Begin vanaf R499 p/m”.

Sean Freimond lodged a complaint with the ARB, saying the cheapest cost for a 20Mbps service was actually R799 per month.

Level 7 wireless is an ISP I've never heard of.
Why these people think they're doing themselves a favour with this kind of nonsense is beyond me. They should be left to do it, they would lose out more that way. People aren't stupid.

Plenty of other products being advertised as "from" then when you query the product it's actually much higher than the stated price. Should have a rule where you can't mix aspects of different products to give an impression of another product.

Level 7 has been around for many years. Just because you have never heard about them has no relevance.

Good luck dealing with a dishonest service provider.
I've used them as a WISP for the last 2.5 years because my area had no alternatives for uncapped broadband. I'm on the 10Mbps uncapped package, torrents are shaped heavily but otherwise I have no real complaints.

While their WISP pricing is quite expensive, it seems to be in line with other WISP's, and a lot cheaper than some. Both Openserve and MetroFibre recently started covering my area and I'll hopefully be getting a fiber connection soon, but in the meantime they are providing a decent service and I'll recommend them to anyone in the same boat.

One of the major drivers of cost for WISPs, is the high antenna space rental from tower owners. It makes up for about 50% of the costs associated with the last mile connection

I have moved from Afrihost to Level 7 about 2 years ago. I have never had any issued with them compared to the constant issues I have had with Afrihost. Poor advertising shouldn't deter someone from using a service.

“We decided to behave as a responsible company and stop being deceptive and treating potential new clients as morons,” it added.
