instead of the customary link drop, here, the article

A family who allegedly sold places to prospective medical school and health science students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for between R250,000 and R500,000 has been bust.

The Sunday Tribune reported that the family, which owns the Little Gujarat restaurant in Durban, worked in partnership with a syndicate at the university to enroll students.

According to the newspaper, evidence suggests they also have ties to the Medical University of Southern Africa.

The family charged R250,000 for a position in the health sciences faculty – pharmacy, optometry, and audiology – and R500,000 for a place in medicine.

For an additional R30,000, students could get access to examination question and answer papers, stated the report.
Difficult for non-black students to get into medicine

In July 2016, news broke that Indian students looking to get into UKZN’s medical school were paying university officials to have themselves registered as Coloured.

The reason was due to the university’s racial quotas which are instituted at the medical school.

UKZN receives 8,300 applicants for 250 places at its medical school each year, with an admissions policy governing who gets in.

Places are reserved for students from Quintile 1, 2, and 3 schools (the “poorest” government schools), while the racial quotas for first-year MBChB students are:

Black African – 69%
Indian – 19%
Coloured – 9%
White – 2%
Other – 1%

The top-performing students who apply from each race group are admitted, which results in the entry-level marks for students of different races being skewed.

The Sunday Tribune reported that in 2015 and 2016, Indian students needed a matric average of 90.83% to get into the medical school.

If their marks were below this, they were not admitted.

interesting:

White and Indian students prejudiced

In 2010, Dr Neville Alexander of the University of Cape Town said UCT’s race-based admissions policy for medical students was “quite ridiculous”.

Alexander said White and Indian students were the most prejudiced.

To stand a “realistic chance” of studying medicine, White students needed:
90% in five matric subjects
80% in one matric subject
80% in a benchmark test

Indian students needed:
90% in four matric subjects
80% in two matric subjects
80% in a benchmark test

Coloured pupils needed 80% in four subjects, 70% in two subjects, and 53% in a benchmark test.

Black students needed between 70-79% in six subjects, and 50% in the benchmark test.

MyBroadband contacted South Africa’s major universities to ask what matric marks White, Indian, Black, and Coloured students needed to get into their medical schools in 2016.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal did not supply the marks for the White, Black, and Coloured students.

The University of Cape Town did not supply the marks required per race group.
It said it incorporated race as “one of several factors to be considered in assessing an applicant’s historic disadvantage”. Other factors included language, parents’ education, and an applicant’s school.

Wits did not supply the marks per race group. It said the university’s admission policy was as follows:
40% of places offered to top-performing students.
20% offered to top-performing rural learners.
20% offered to top-performing learners from quintile 1 and 2 schools.
20% offered to high-achieving African and Coloured learners.

The University of the Free State was the only university to supply the requested marks.
It said it does not use racial quotas for medicine, but makes efforts to accommodate candidates from a disadvantaged academic background.
The average student marks are based on Admission Points scores, which are based on matric subject results.
Black – 42.34
Coloured – 44.15
White – 45.55
Indian – 45.61

The University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University failed to reply to questions by the time of publication.

Now I understand why white kids decide to study in Australia, Europe, Anerica. What a f'd up situation. No wonder South Africa is going the way it is going. Give a few more decades and you'll be truly f'd up :(

Racial quotas distort markets, or create new ones where there never existed, and not to the benefit of the intended beneficiaries of the quota.

As per my other thread here, the white kids should just tick that they're black. Who's gonna do what to them? They're realistically not going to get in anyway, so may as well try and make a stand.

You would think that after paying R250k or R500k that the exam questions and answers would be included.

No wonder South Africa is going the way it is going. Give a few more decades and you'll be truly f'd up :(
A few more decades? Less than one decade before the point of no return has been reached if that isn't already the case.

Their parents would have to do it when they enter the education system.

They will be charged with "defying the ends of justice" or some other retard thing like that. Interestingly, in the bad old days, the racists did not deny blacks to study at universities. They merely did not want them to study at the same university as whites. I guess the racists were afraid blacks will burn the university down (or some other stupid reason.)
Anyway, nowadays blacks do not allow whites to study at ANY university (unless the whites are substantially better than blacks). WTF is this? What is the "first year" dropout rate of black vs white students?
As a side note - I wonder which of the two systems is more racist? Whites should finance a private university with EQUAL entry conditions for ALL races! That will be a hard 'slap in the face' to the racist government of South Africa and it will stop the 'brain drain'. Oh, and just to 'rub salt in the wound': the teaching language should be decided by the students and not government.

-the dropout rate of the people with lower matric points are higher (it is quite obvious)
- which means SA is getting less doctors than was possible if they only took in the best into med school
- who suffers the most? the poor people!
-have you seen what a govt hospital looks like and how understaffed they are?
-another ANC plan that backfired

They should also investigate to check if they did not sell any medical degrees or other qualifications.

#UKZNMedBust suspects get R40 000 bail

Durban – Durban restaurateurs accused of selling spots to study at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s medical school were granted R40 000 bail in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Varsha, 44, Hitesh Bhatt, 46, and co-accused Preshni Hiraman, 54, made a brief court appearance on Monday after their arrests by the Hawks on Friday.

The couple run a popular, internationally rated restaurant, Little Gujarat, in the Durban CBD.

The trio face charges of corruption for allegedly selling spaces at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine and other health science places at the university for a fee of between R250 000 and R500 000.

The racket was exposed by The Mercury’s sister paper the Sunday Tribune.

Provincial National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Kara said the magistrate had granted bail of R40 000 each on condition that they surrender their passports, that they do not go to UKZN or leave Durban without the consent of the investigating officer.

They were ordered not to interfere with the investigation.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the police investigation was ongoing and further arrests were imminent.

So there's multiple avenues for buying places at UKZN medschool given that last year there were reports of someone buying a place for 20K. A bit like how Zululand operated a degree vending machine

They sold examination papers and answers for R30 000. Pathetic. It also means they pay for qualifications.
