On Wednesday, Magic: The Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast took unprecedented measures to remove racist cards from its game. Seven cards in all, dating back to 1994, are now banned from play. Their images will also being removed from the game’s official online database.

“The events of the past weeks and the ongoing conversation about how we can better support people of color have caused us to examine ourselves, our actions, and our inactions,” Wizards said in a statement. “We appreciate everyone helping us to recognize when we fall short. We should have been better, we can be better, and we will be better.”

One card in particular, Invoke Prejudice, was singled out. It shows a hooded executioner with a black axe. “If opponent casts a Summon spell that does not match the color of one of the creatures under your control, that spell is countered,” says the card. It effectively kills off creatures that don’t look like the creatures already on the table.

Bit late to be turning on your comrades now.....
Looks to me like this is the company and companies deciding of their own accord that things will offend chipped black people. I think the practice is patronising. It assumes black people will take offense or the companies are offended on their behalf.

Read now even Lady Antebellum is changing to Lady A as its racist.

I think they should also remove the reference to Lady...maybe Non-Binary A

2021: Wizards of the Coast has changed their name to "of the Coast" due to the sexist implication of the company's previous name.

Looking at it in context, “Invoke Prejudice” probably should have been removed years ago. Ordered alphabetically and by release date, the card has been assigned the ID 1488 in Gatherer, an unfortunate coincidence which seems to refer to two numbers significant to Nazis and white supremacists. To make matters worse, the card’s artist, Harold McNeill, is known for his references to Nazi imagery.

Pandering to morons basically.

People who take offence at words like antebellum or woman should be beaten about the head repeatedly with a very large dictionary. Honestly they're already so stupid and useless it couldn't do them any further harm.

Arrows fired...

I read their socials, MTG have buckled under the political pressure,

To that end, we will be removing a number of images from our database that are racist or culturally offensive, including:
  • Invoke Prejudice
  • Cleanse
  • Stone-Throwing Devils
  • Pradesh Gypsies
  • Jihad
  • Imprison
  • Crusade
Replacing those card images will be the following statement:

"We have removed this card image from our database due to its racist depiction, text, or combination thereof. Racism in any form is unacceptable and has no place in our games, nor anywhere else."
Additionally, these cards will be banned in all sanctioned tournament play.
There's much more work to be done as we continue to make our games, communities, and company more inclusive. Know that we work every day to be better and that we hear you. We look forward to sharing more of our plans with you as our games and organization evolve.

and once the 'white privilege' (you know, Sorcery) card was pointed out, minutes within their announcement they responded,

We are starting a review of every card we have printed. This first pass isn't meant to be an exhaustive catalogue of every problematic card in Magic’s history, and we will continue to take actions on similar cards in the future.

Now I have to ask, are J. R. R. Tolkien, Andrzej Sapkowsk and others work also going to be abolished, adapted or cleansed?
