Is it possible to listen to radio stations with ADSL here (the shaped version)?

I’ve often thought how good it would be to able to listen to Radio 5 Live from the BBC while typing away.

You can, but imagine the bandwidth that is going to burn.

Yes you can. If u serious download iTunes, it is free and has an extensive list of stations. Alternativly you can go to ur local stations web site and get there streaming info. Most of the large stations do streaming. Great station is the UK's Radio 1.

I find this incredibly frustrating. Because my house is surrounded by mountains, I have problems getting good radio reception, which now prevents me from listening to the radio at all. I can, however, listen to my favourite radio station on the net. But even though it's local, Telkom is preventing me from doing this because they include local traffic in the cap. Incredibly frustrating! [:(!]

Hi VQuest

Where do you live?

There are other options:
1) Buy a external FM antenna with booster. If there's some sort of signal on your car radio outside, chances are good you will get good reception with the antenna and booster. I got this from a factory in Brackenfell (CT) for around R300 including the booster a year ago.
2) Worldspace satellite radio have been around for a while. The sound quality isn't too bad (I'd guess similar to 40 kbps Internet Radio). Virgin UK is on there which is excellent, CNN too. www.worldspace.com The receiver costs around R2000.
3) DSTV has a couple of radio channels. All the SABC stations are on there (5FM for instance) as well as 702, Classic FM, Jacaranda and Radio Wave (Namibia) and few other non music stations.

Hope it helps.

Interesting dilemma, now isn’t it? ADSL is supposed to be an always on connection to the internet but due to the severe restrictions that Telkom has imposed on it, you cannot use it to its full potential for the simple reason that if you do, you will run yourself into financial ruin.

If it was a reasonable limitation (cap) then it might still pass but now you sit with a 3 GB cap which is enough to make you go, “wait a minute, how much is this online radio station going to cost me?” or “hold on, I cannot afford to play this new entertaining MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) tonight after work because it will rake up the bandwidth quicker than I can afford.

All kinds of worries start to float around in your head and before long; you are more worried about guarding your bandwidth than you are about whether there is enough food in the house. As you know, food ranks high on most peoples list of things to worry about. Bandwidth has outranked food now, thanks to the sterling efforts of Telkom.

Gone are the simple joys of quickly downloading a new game demo without working out a complicated financial budget and a SWOT analysis in which you vigorously debate the pro’s has and con’s of the said download. Then comes the dreaded question of listening to online media. Should I dare listen to Virgin Radio UK? Oh my goodness the bandwidth! Maybe not. What the hell, I will quickly check my email and go watch some telly…

Cheers
Antowan

ajax, thanks for all the useful info :)

I just wish we did not have to go to so much trouble just because of Telkom being so incredibly unreasonable. Most everyone, anywhere in the world who has ADSL can listen to radio stations all over the world without worrying about being capped. But Telkom forbids us to listen to local radio? What the heck is that all about?

Well antowan, how ironic this is.... For me, I have to do just that. Because if I run out of bandwidth I can't work. If I can't work, I can't make any money. If I can't make any money, I can't buy any food! So I have to spend more time counting bytes than actually consuming bites.

It's becoming more and more frustrating for me.

Reech, you shouldn't have shown me this - found a great 80's station (showing my age here) - I'm gonna be capped by tomorrow :)

Hi VQuest,

I got hooked on that one too.
Take a look at http://www.ratajik.com/stationripper/
Great tool for mopping up the last of the 3G at month end and gives you lots to listen too for the next month.

Cheers
