Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

Just started raining in Stellenbosch.

About 10mm in our gauge in Kenilworth up to 3pm. Really bucketing down here...

Edit: 32mm in our gauge up to 7pm. SAEON Dwarsberg recorded an impressive 81mm up to midnight!

Lovely drizzle here in the Deep South. Just saw this on Skiboat Mobile. Posted about an hour ago. @Gordon_R please tell us more. Looked like a front to me:

"The latest satellite image (11:25) showing an awesome out-of-space look at a frontal depression (also known as a mid-latitude cyclone/wave cyclone/extra-tropical cyclone) south of SA. The cold front of the system is currently approximately 350kms west of Cape Town and expected to make landfall this afternoon. Moderate to heavy rain (and possible thunderstorms) can affect parts of the SW Cape from this afternoon into tonight. Stay safe."

The part of the system passing over CT is called the frontal boundary, the system as a whole is known as an extra-tropical cyclone. The nomenclature is used rather casually. The central low/depression rarely makes direct impact on land, most pass far to the south of us...

Thanks. So, just a regular front?

The Daily Maverick has an article expanding on the SAWS statement, with some context and comment from academic researchers:
Observatory, the oldest weather station in southern Africa, with data since 1850, recorded the wettest July on record and the third wettest month overall after June 1905 and May 1877.
When July came, cold fronts were being sent straight in towards Cape Town, one after another. In addition, Conradie said the setup was such that moisture, water vapour from South America, was being channelled directly into the mountains here.

This also happened in June 2023 and Conradie said it was quite remarkable that we had these two extreme winter months for two years in a row, with a very similar setup.
“Expect extreme weather… We’re going to have another drought eventually in the Western Cape. It seems crazy to talk about it in the winter like this. But imagine if I was standing next to Theewaterskloof Dam in January of 2018, with the dam bone dry, and I said that in five years’ time, this dam is going to be 104% full. What are the chances of that? But here we are, every dam is full,” Sweijd said.

Was flipping cold this morning in CT but looks to be a great day now. Looks like spring is going to be a chilly one.

Had extremely gale force winds this side during early morning hours. Now it's dead quiet and peaceful. It's going to be a lekka day here, hoping for the same or even better tomorrow

woke me up around 4am, think someone's something left their yard, hit our roof and made its way again to its next destination, few weeks ago someone's yard umbrella was in our yard, pity it was broken, looked expensive

Winter is not over until the fat lady sings. Errr, maybe that should be changed to:
Winter is not over until the warm lady sings, given all this hooha about global warming.

It was very warm here in Vredekloof today given the strong berg wind blowing.

I am going to miss this weather. The wind had a beating during Wednesday's early morning. I don't like strong wind though. The rain is welcome, storms are welcome. I do care about people impacted by disasters.

The last Summers we experienced was simply inhumane. I don't like to plak against things.

This winter cold was bearable, there were some cold days, but I still walked around in my onderbroek. Travelling in the rain is bad.

Damn, really hitting hard this morning!
Started much earlier than expected. Thought I'd be safe on the stoep, but woke up with duvet drenched at 4:30. Had to move inside. Then a hell of a shower at 5:30-6.

Now that it's supposed to be raining, the sky's gone blue. I need a better forecasting site.
