I got this response from rain.

Hi

I have checked your connection and the site you are connected to, and it’s us not you. The lock down has caused congestion on certain towers which was impossible to plan for, and unfortunately your are connecting to one of those towers. Given the COVID-19 epidemic, this is a phenomenon that is being experienced by networks all over the world.

Unfortunately this is not something we can solve quickly, and even more so during this lock down period. This means we cannot remedy your situation now. If you believe the service is not workable, rain will refund you the costs of the service since the lock down and cancel your service.

We will continue to improve capacity rapidly as soon as the lock down regulations are relaxed. We hope to see you back as a client then.

Please confirm if you wish for us to cancel your service and refund you.

if there is an issue is a congestion can someone explain how come my upload speed is between 3-6mb?
I have been having these slow speeds before lockdown but when I bought R50 peak data I would get 20mb+.
but now on this unlimited package, I get 2mb after 6 pm.

Simple enough to answer...more people download than they upload so there is more capacity available.

Funny enough I have had the exact same response...looks like a copy and paste scenario - maybe this is the general accepted response from Rain when someone has a problem with connectivity...

there is a way to make you jump a tower... Most of these rain towers are not DUAL signal. They cover either the 1800mhz or the 2100 or 2300mhz range. It's usually a different tower for each. (at least that is the case by me)

So if your router can do 1800 and 2100/2300 , you can force it to change to other frequency, which then forces you onto another tower. It might be further or give less signal. (maybe drop a bar or two) but if it's less congested it will still be worth it.

On the other hand, if both are congested. It's like jumping from the pool with sharks in it, to the pool that has Piranhas in it.

The difference beween fdd and tdd LTE. Fdd on Band 3 is dual channel so unless people upload constantly upload will always be better.

I remember certain rain packages being unlimited and also speed limited.

I found this. It means these packages will never do 20mbit and 30mbit like the R250 uncapped option which is uncapped between 11pm and 6pm.

"This was the first mobile data product offered by Rain, and it was recently followed by a new uncapped 4G offering for R479 per month. This new product delivers unlimited data at all hours, but is limited to a maximum speed of 10Mbps and a video streaming resolution of 360p " <-- this one will have limited speed of between 2mbit to 10mbit depending on the amount of users in your RAIN pool.

This is my current speed on the 24/7 package, has been like this since yesterday after weeks of being barely usable. So for me it speeds are only limited because of the amount of users. To note I logged a complaint with them every single day for 3 weeks. Have a whole folder full of emails between me and them and they finally got it sorted it seems.. My video streaming is also not limited to 360p, has never been, not even when I had crap speeds.

I wouldn't been satisfied with 10mbps so I'm not complaining about this speeds.

It's supposed to be, but it seems not.

I think your case if more the exception than the rule. Have you done tests on fast.com to see what speeds you'll get on netflix?

Shows 5.2mbps. But my speeds on rain test are also down to 8 mbps, which is still fine for me.

Not really sure what the fast.com speeds signify though.

If my R479 package were atleast 20mbps I would not have to pay for both packages. Right now I don't have much choice. But I also cannot complain either as I get the full advertised 10mbps up and down. I can only hope they see the light and increase it from 10 to 20mbps standard even if the price will be pushed to R500.
