Rain launches uncapped 4G data for phones package for R379

Rain has launched a new unlimited 4G data package for mobile phones priced at R379 per month on a month-to-month contract.

The service offers unlimited data, but with restrictions on the streaming resolution and the ability to use your phone as a hotspot.
  • Basic streaming resolution will only provide a streaming quality resolution of up to 360p.
  • The service will not allow you to use your smartphone as a mobile hotspot.
  • The service can only be used on 4G phones.

How can they detect if you are using it as a hotspot? I know in the US the carriers block the Hotspot setting on their branded devices, but people get past that by rooting and then installing the original brand firmware.

TTL or deep packet inspection.

There's a few publically known, like APN parameters, leased IP detection and packet monitoring from origin, those are bypassable but for the effort it takes and the outcome you get on this deal it's really not worth it IMO. Phones at home with rain will generally catch poor speeds and can't mount external antennas plus switch bands like routers so it's definitely best suited for customers out and about in cities and such.

How would they enforce that?

Also, nitpick for MyBB, the streaming quality for the 19-hour package is not officially unlimited, they have since March throttled some use cases to ~4mbps which is good for a steady 720/1080p YouTube and 480/720p Netflix etc., you definitely cannot get an enjoyable 4K out of it by default hehe.

I don't mind the restrictions, they can even rate-limit connectivity. Just don't ask R380/pm for it in that case.

Is there any alternative?

@R379 for unlimited mobile data usage do you mind suggesting some alternatives?
Their R480 package or the R50/gig option. No funnies with these.

Rain's garbage most of the time TBH. I have the R50/Gig SIM which I use as a backup and it's not great when you need it to be stable; there's random, sudden, spikes in pings that ruins your day when you least need it.
