Rain plans big 5G expansion in South Africa

Rain aims to greatly accelerate the rollout of its 5G network in South Africa, according to an investment update issued by African Rainbow Capital (ARC).

In its update, ARC said that Rain has been making good progress with its network rollout and has shown continued growth despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

April fool and all. So now the whole country must be with sub par internet service and speed. It’s 2020, haven’t we suffered enough?

Rain worked great for me. No real problems whatsoever.

Yeah, mine not so much . Got it in January with much fanfare. By lockdown it was disconnecting about 10 times a day and the times it were up, there were no throughput. After struggling for weeks with the support CENTRE, I received an email stating that they are cancelling my account cause I now fall in a bad reception area. So fine got a new ISP (no fibre in my area and adsl does not really exist), and decided to make sure they don’t bill me again (since at their behest I moved on to someone else). Now they want to know why I stopped paying

The timeline for the launch of a 5G network in Durban is more uncertain, but Rain hopes to also achieve that within the year.

Do do they want to achieve launching 5G in Durban this year or do they want to achieve making a timeline for launching before the end of this year?

I wish Rain can clarify how many 4G sites they plan to use in long run, because two years back they said they plan to use 5000 sites under Vodacom agreement
then initially have additional 5000 sites with other MNO/cellphone tower companies
Few months later they said by 2020 they will have 5000 sites and back tracked from possible 10000 sites
Recently updated Vodacom deal to use almost all Vodacom sites but didn't indicate possible target
Should places that don't have Rain coverage give up or Rain will roll out additional sites this year then by 2021 they will freeze 4G roll out

Sure it will be a great experience for the first 100 people, then you will see a drop in speed and connection. Give it 9 months or so then its useable and best option will be to cancel the service.

I just pray for more than 2Mbps speeds in the evenings - but hey ! thats to &^& much to ask for now isn't it.

Interesting to see their BIG expansion intentions when we see users posting threads struggling with their existing service.

Wow ... this inferior service gives me problems all the time with hours and hours of snail slow internet of no service at all daily ... customer service is "terra incognita" to them and customer support almost does not exist with no tel.no or chat (which disappeared from their website) - just e-mail you are waiting for replies for weeks ... now they are having "Big Roll Out Plans" ... however, one thing they are brilliantly efficient with, is debiting your account monthly with no delay ...

On premium package 5G you only pay a premium... not get premium speeds. Oh it rains in my area but the seeds cannot grow
