So an interesting thing happened. Rain is busy testing their 5G network in Cape Town and now the Durban 4G connection I have is routing everything through Cape Town. Even local pings to Durban route there and back.

Tests all conducted from Durban.

Eish, my area didn't seem to have any 5g towers planned based on the map for Cape town which was shared a while back

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but Rain likely just lost their peering at NAP AFrica Durban and now route to closest point which they probably see as CPT instead of JHB.

You best chance of possible 5G would be to look for 65573 on a 4G phone or device that supports LTE Band 3. That means basically ever LTE device out there.

To inflate the bubble again. There have already been sightings of a coverage map and the towers going up in CPT on that band. Sadly no such thing in Durban yet and the technicians are giving zero hints towards it, but I did get told in 2020 it will definitely be here so there is that. No idea about their NAP Africa routing but probably the case and they just decided to use their CPT links.

If I'm not mistaken there is already an active site in Stellenbosch. Not on the map though.
Not going to say I know exactly but I heard that they have a few testing sites and Stellenbosch is one of the big ones. Next week I am going to drive around Durban to see if I can pick up any 5G towers or find a testing site.

This is what you are looking for in terms of the sector antennas on the tower itself.

The weird thing is that Rain initially tested 5G in Cape Town and we were told it would be one of the first cities to have 5G...yet here we are.
