Rain is back at it again. Throttling any streaming service. When watching youtube, i noticed my speeds are capped at 1.5mbs and i can only watch at 480p. Switching on vpn my speeds go up to 60mbps and i can easily watch 4k. Why they are doing this, i have no idea. Download speeds and other things appear unchanged. I am yet to find out if anything else has been affected. First it was torrents and even now watching videos is being throttled. really? Is anyone else facing this issue with Rain? I am facing this issue on both phone and b315s router.

60mps on an LTE line? Using a VPN? Wow.
I always had 60+ Mbps. i can do speed tests for you. I live about 200meters from the tower and on a 2600mhz frequency which is not congested at all in my area. speeds are insane

Remember they launched R479 version now all day uncapped, think limiting other services also

I noticed from yesterday that I can barely stream a Youtube video on Rain. Buffering like hell so I actually stopped trying to watch.

I am on their R250 offpeak package so I guess they launch a new all day package for R479 and the users on their cheapest package are throttled .....

but that is not what their plans say. That is not what differentiates the plans. The 250 is not supposed to be throttled because it is not an all day. You can easily get around this by instaling a chrome vpn extension and stream easily but on other devices nope.

And as usual, they will get away with it, because south africans love mediocrity.

exactly. Already giving them a hard time. I am on a different plan and i am being throttled to 360p what the hell? this is just unacceptable. Meaning they are deliberately giving me a service i did not pay for or sign up for. You will see most people compromising and accepting 360p. try watching that on a high resolution screen or even a phone with a 1440p screen. It looks horrible

Hi

Thank you for contacting rain

Please note that we will not be able to activate R479 on that sim card you will have to order a new sim from the rain website for the R479.

Thanks,

I download but the problem man is not the speeds. it is streaming videos. enabling vpn solves the issue but i would rather not be enabling vpn all the time

Got told the same thing. Seems silly that you cannot just switch between packages since most individuals are not going to have both services running at the same time since there is major overalp. Unless its for another family member, device or to benefit from better speeds. These should be rare cases.

My usage a month is around 900GB, and I a on the R250 package. I had a problem from November to early January, couldnt do anything during the day, felt like dail up then. But everything is back to normal now, can stream 1080p no buffering during the day... My youtube is on all day till 6 and downloading movies/series for the whole 19 hours. and that is in Mossel Bay.
