So I was trying to setup my rain account so I can buy the sim. But it seems like the ID slot is not compatible for passports. Does anyone know when they will be able to fix this and whether there can be a way around this

Unfortunately not. Even if you managed to order RAM Hand to hand couriers will not give you the simcard if you can not produce a ID with copies.

Yes. It's not RAM. Rain only allows SA ID numbers. If you enter your passport number then when they deliver RAM will ask for your ID and there will be a mismatch so they won't deliver.

With Vodacom you signed up with your passport so when it's handed over to RAM the confirmation would be to confirm passport.

word is Rain had issues with nigerians signing up with lots of different sims and clogging network / abusing the system so they had to discontinue accepting passports to curb that situation otherwise they did accept passports when they initially launched. Just what I heard from the grapevine anyways carried by the wind. Don't hold it as the gospel truth.

Except, I tried signing up from the beginning with a passport.
